Praying Between His Shoulders

Old Treasures on Tuesdays!

“So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is sick.’” (John 11:3, NIV)

This is one of the most powerful verses on prayer in the Bible. So powerful was this prayer that it resulted in the resurrection from the dead! Here was the key: Martha and Mary appealed to Jesus’ tender affection for them.

Notice that their petition to Jesus didn’t say, “Jesus, we have been such a good host family to you. We have taken impeccable care of you each time you pass through town. We have fed you, given you a restful place to get away from the crowds, and never forgotten your birthday. We’ve been some of your most devoted disciples. So we really feel like it’s only right that you take our dire need into consideration…”

No. It was simply, “The one you love needs you.”

Do you realize that you are the one He loves? You are. You are the one He loves. You. This is why He taught us to start out our prayers addressing God – not as “Almighty Creator,” nor as “Supreme Ruler of the Universe.” Although He is those things, He ever so tenderly instructed us to approach Him saying, “Father…” Daddy. His Spirit in us cries out, Abba Father.

You don’t need to stand at a respectful distance, either. Be His little one. Crawl right up into His lap. “Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders” (Deut. 33:12, NIV). That’s you. You are the one He loves. He is inviting you, in this moment, to rest secure in Him, to rest deeply in the heart knowledge that He’s got you. That He will be shielding you all day long today. Rest between His shoulders, in His everlasting arms. From this posture, try out this prayer:

“Daddy, the one you love needs you…”

When you pray, do you lean into Daddy’s love for you?

  2. Great Post Jennifer! Very inspiring and encouraging. The scripture says we may go boldly to the throne of grace….But also with humility and thanksgiving in our hearts for a God who is just so merciful and full of grace.
