Power Is Coming Out of Him

“All the people were trying to touch Jesus, because power was coming from him and healing them all” (Luke 6:19, NCV).

I invite you to take a pause with me and imagine this scene. Multitudes are swarming to Jesus. Word has gotten out. “This One will heal anybody that comes to Him; even anyone that touches Him!” If you’ve ever been in a crowd that was full of eager energy, you know what this crowd dynamic was like. If you’ve ever felt a crowd pushing you, you also know how intense this atmosphere was, and how stressful this can be. No wonder Jesus needed strategies like getting into a boat to create a little space from those precious souls on the shore!

There is one detail from this scene, though, that stands out the most: the power emanating from Him. Apparently, anyone who managed to just lay a finger on Jesus got healed. So the woman with the issue of blood was not the only one! Looks like there were countless others that wanted to touch His clothing too. The crowds pushed in hungrily this way because they knew… if they could just touch Him, they would be completely healed!

Can you imagine if Jesus came to visit your town, in the flesh? Can you imagine if word got out, “He’s here! He’s healing every single person that approaches Him!” Do you know anyone right now who is suffering from a chronic disease? One the doctors haven’t been able to help with? How about everyone battling covid? A 100% guarantee of healing, if you just touch Him! How we would rush to go to where He was teaching! You’d drag any doubtful sick friend along with you, wouldn’t you?

You know what though? Jesus is here. He is in town. And He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the image of the invisible God. He came to earth to “translate God.” He came to show us the Father, to reveal what the Almighty is like, in human, relatable terms. He came to be “God with skin on,” God that we could touch, feel, hear, and see. God that we could take in with our five senses. He is the “exact representation of His nature” (Heb. 1:3, NASB). So, in any scene of Jesus’ life that we read in the four gospels, we are getting a direct, steady glimpse of the Unseen One. Like Moses, we are seeing Him who is Invisible (Heb. 11:27).

So, if we read here in Luke 6:19 that power was coming out of Him and healing everyone, that is a glimpse of our eternal God. Right now, power is coming out of Him. Power is constantly coming out of Him. It emanates from Him unceasingly. If we press in to touch Him, we connect with that power. It comes into us and heals the diseases of our bodies, souls, and spirits. It makes us whole.

Jesus, our Immanuel, is here this very moment. Will you reach out with expectant faith and touch Him?

Did Jesus ever say “no,” to anyone who approached Him for healing? Why or why not?

  1. He tried to say no to the woman and he even said it wasn’t fair to give the children’s bread to the dogs, but of course her faith moved Him to answer her request – and her story gives hope to people like me! 😀

    1. Funny thing, another dear friend of mine also named Dawn was just talking to me about that same story a few days ago! Apparently Max Lucado really has some neat insights into it. Amen! How confident faith in His goodness stirs His heart!
