How Do You Know When God Is Talking?

“My sheep hear My voice.” (John 10:27, NKJV)

“I am the Lord, the one who heals you.” (Ex. 15:26, TEV)

Back during my first year of dating my husband-to-be, he and his brother found an entertaining way to amuse themselves when I would call on the phone. (Yes, this was before cell phones became ubiquitous, back in the Stone Ages 😊) Their voices are so similar to each other’s that they found they could pass the phone back and forth between themselves and I wouldn’t realize it. Under the impression that I was talking just to my honey, I was instead talking to both of them alternately. They found this trick absolutely hilarious!

Today, two decades later, there’s no way they could pull that one on me. After so many years of daily hearing my husband talk, his voice is one of the most familiar sounds in my world.

In the same way, the more we walk with the Lord, the more we learn to distinguish His voice from all the other sounds coming into our hearts’ ears. Recently, He was talking to me about the healing property of His voice. Part of His core identity is Jehova Rapha, our Healer. Healing is not just what He does; it’s who He is.

Here’s how to recognize His beautiful voice: His voice sounds like His name. He is Healer, so everything He does carries His healing essence. It’s His very nature. Just being around Him, near Him, is healing. His company, His presence, His closeness holds a profoundly rich healing quality. His voice flows in a healing tone because its timber emanates from His core nature. His voice is peaceful because He is Jehovah Shalom. His voice is not angry because He is not an angry God; He is exceedingly slow to anger and abounding immeasurably in unfailing love and mercy. His voice is loving and gentle because He is love.

What are some of the ways the Lord has taught you to recognize when He is speaking? I’d love to hear in the comments about your own journey of learning to listen for His voice!
