“And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one…” (Matt. 25:15a, NKJV).
There’s a hidden truth in this parable that just might surprise you.
First though, let’s discuss what’s immediately obvious. The man with five talents, by some standards, might be considered the lucky one. He ended up with more than everyone else. He represents those people in our world that seem to have been dealt the most impressive “hand” from God in this life. You know, the ones that seem to have it all together. Or the ones that seem to be brilliant at everything.
Sometimes this “winning hand” takes the shape of greater advantages the person had growing up: access to more wealth, better education, and open doors of opportunity. In other cases, the individual has been naturally endowed with astonishing intellectual genius. Or outstanding creative ability. Or remarkable leadership charisma. Or even a stunning combination of these gifts. In other words, the five talent guys in our lives leave many of us looking on with admiration and maybe a little envy.
The man in this story with the five talents had more than everyone else. He was the type that was easy to begrudge. He was the one that caused others to look discontentedly at the cards in their own hands, wishing for his.
You know what, though? God categorized this man’s five talents as non-amazing. In commending the man’s faithfulness, notice that He did not say, “Wow, you are an impressive individual! I am blown away by your abilities! Staggered by what you have managed to accomplish!” Nope. Rather, His commendation was “You were loyal with small things” (Matt. 25:21, NCV). The substantial hand dealt to this man may have seemed extraordinary to other humans, but to God, it was “small.”
After all, whatever we have to offer in this life… it is a gift. We did nothing to come up with it. As the Lord pointedly, lovingly asks us, “Who says you are better than others? What do you have that was not given to you? And if it was given to you, why do you brag as if you did not receive it as a gift?” (1 Cor. 4:7, NCV). He could not get more frank than that. He tenderly confronts us with this liberating truth: we have absolutely no grounds for boasting. We have no basis, whatsoever, for self-congratulation. Everything that we have, everything that we can do, is His accomplishment. Not ours.
For this reason, no matter who we are, our talents do not impress God. Neither to our achievements. Their quantity carries no weight with Him either. Nor does their apparent sparkle or shine.
What does draw His rapt attention, however, is our wholehearted faithfulness.
It’s the way we pour out our everyday lives to Him in worship, giving to Him our very best, that gets written in His Book of Remembrance. It’s how we offer back to Him what He has so generously bestowed on us. Our loyal, devoted, minute-by-minute investment of time into seeking what matters to Him – this captures His heart and causes it to overflow.
No matter if we have five talents, or two, or one, or sixty, or .003, Jesus is equally delighted when we are unreservedly faithful with the hand He entrusted to us. When we get up in the morning and offer Him the day ahead for the purposes of His heart, His soul swells up with joy. His lovely voice speaks into our spirits once again, “Well done, good and faithful servant…”

In diesem Gleichnis steckt eine verborgene Wahrheit, die Sie überraschen könnte.
Lassen Sie uns zunächst jedoch besprechen, was sofort offensichtlich ist. Der Mann mit fünf Talenten könnte nach manchen Maßstäben als der Glückliche angesehen werden. Am Ende hatte er mehr als alle anderen. Er repräsentiert jene Menschen in unserer Welt, denen in diesem Leben die beeindruckendste „Hand“ von Gott zuteil geworden zu sein scheint. Weißt du, diejenigen, die alles zusammen zu haben scheinen. Oder diejenigen, die in allem brillant zu sein scheinen.
Manchmal nimmt diese „gewinnende Hand“ die Form größerer Vorteile an, die die Person hatte, als sie aufwuchs: Zugang zu mehr Wohlstand, besserer Bildung und offenen Türen für Möglichkeiten. In anderen Fällen ist das Individuum von Natur aus mit einem erstaunlichen intellektuellen Genie ausgestattet. Oder herausragende kreative Fähigkeiten. Oder bemerkenswertes Führungscharisma. Oder sogar eine atemberaubende Kombination dieser Geschenke. Mit anderen Worten, die fünf Talente in unserem Leben lassen viele von uns mit Bewunderung und vielleicht ein wenig Neid zurück.
Der Mann in dieser Geschichte mit den fünf Talenten hatte mehr als alle anderen. Er war der Typ, den man leicht missgönnen konnte. Er war derjenige, der andere dazu brachte, unzufrieden auf die Karten in ihren eigenen Händen zu schauen und sich seine zu wünschen.
Aber weißt du was? Gott stufte die fünf Talente dieses Mannes als nicht erstaunlich ein. Wenn Sie die Treue des Mannes loben, beachten Sie, dass er nicht gesagt hat: „Wow, Sie sind eine beeindruckende Person! Ich bin überwältigt von deinen Fähigkeiten! Beeindruckt von dem, was Sie erreicht haben!“ Nö. Vielmehr war sein Lob „Du warst loyal in kleinen Dingen“ (Mt. 25:21, NCV). Die beträchtliche Hand, die diesem Mann zuteil wurde, mag anderen Menschen außergewöhnlich erschienen sein, aber für Gott war sie „klein“.
Schließlich ist alles, was wir in diesem Leben zu bieten haben, ein Geschenk. Wir haben nichts getan, um darauf zu kommen. Der Herr fragt uns ausdrücklich und liebevoll: „Wer sagt, dass Sie besser sind als andere? Was hast du, was dir nicht gegeben wurde? Und wenn es dir geschenkt wurde, warum prahlst du dann, als hättest du es nicht geschenkt bekommen?“ (1 Korinther 4:7, NCV). Er konnte nicht offener werden. Zärtlich konfrontiert er uns mit dieser befreienden Wahrheit: Wir haben absolut keinen Grund, uns zu rühmen. Wir haben keinerlei Grundlage für Selbstbeweihräucherung. Alles, was wir haben, alles, was wir tun können, ist seine Errungenschaft. Nicht unseres.
Aus diesem Grund beeindrucken unsere Talente Gott nicht, egal wer wir sind. Auch nicht zu unseren Leistungen. Auch ihre Quantität fällt bei Ihm nicht ins Gewicht. Auch nicht ihr scheinbares Funkeln oder Leuchten.
Was jedoch Seine gespannte Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht, ist unsere aufrichtige Treue.
Es ist die Art und Weise, wie wir Ihm unser tägliches Leben in Anbetung ausschütten und Ihm unser Allerbestes geben, das in Sein Gedenkbuch geschrieben wird. So geben wir ihm zurück, was er uns so großzügig geschenkt hat. Unsere treue, hingebungsvolle, Minute für Minute investierte Zeit in die Suche nach dem, was Ihm wichtig ist – das erobert Sein Herz und lässt es überfließen.
Egal, ob wir fünf Talente haben oder zwei oder eins oder sechzig oder 0,003, Jesus freut sich gleichermaßen, wenn wir mit der uns anvertrauten Hand uneingeschränkt treu sind. Wenn wir morgens aufstehen und ihm den kommenden Tag für die Zwecke seines Herzens anbieten, schwillt seine Seele vor Freude an. Seine liebliche Stimme spricht uns noch einmal ins Gemüt: „Gut gemacht, guter und treuer Diener …“

He just translated Jennifer’s post into German: what an amazing gift of multiplication from God! Hallelujah! (I grew up blingual — my parents were missionaries in Germany, so I can understand what he wrote). May God continue to send out and multiply the broken bread Jennifer shares to feed God’s sheep and lambs the world over.

Makes me wonder if we could offer that as a free service to bless Jennifer’s ministry. I am (near)fluent in Dutch and could give it a go with some help – although most Dutch people are already fluent in English.

I recall being asked, “What do you call someone who speaks two languages?” Answer, “Bilingual.”
“What if they speak three languages?” “Trilingual.”
“What do you call someone who speaks one language?” “Monoligual”?

🤣 My sister’s and my best friends were Americans in Germany. They were also fluent in German and the oldest (my age) still is. Just shows me we need every member of the Body, right? There will also be a gifting you have that we multilinguals don’t have and that we need your help with. My spiritual Mama is American also and you could say she is monolingual but then her connection with me in the Spirit is incredible 😊: and without Jesus in her I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Love this Jennifer. God brought this parable back to full circle recently. It was one God gifted me when I felt like I didn’t have enough to share what He was asking me to – it encouraged me to obey each little step till I published my book. Only a handfull bought it (a blogging friend bought ten copies to give to friends 🤣). But she gave me the greatest gift in telling me it encouraged her to get back into the Word herself as I quoted Scripture throughout.
A few weeks ago I reminded my brother about this parable, when he felt himself lacking. But God turned it around and convicted my own heart, asking me: but are you investing what you’ve been given too, Anna, or are you looking at your meager supply, rather than to Me?
And this is so good to come again now, as it affirmed something I was praying about this morning: asking God about the various things He’s put on my heart. It’s given me direction in prayer: thank you.
