“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word (rhema) of Christ.” (Rom. 10:17, ESV)
Here we have the second key for engaging with the strengthening of our faith. Faith comes from hearing God’s words.
The Greek for “word” in this verse is rhema. Rhema means the spoken word of God. When God’s personal word to us bubbles up from His heart and Holy Spirit transmits the message to our spirit, that is rhema. By His Spirit, He speaks it right to our core. Spirit-to-spirit communication takes place. When this happens, faith comes into being. This is how faith is born. This is also how faith is both activated and strengthened.
The most surefire way to connect with God’s rhema is through His logos. Logos is the Greek for “written word.” When we develop a love relationship with the Lord, we will likewise fall in love with the Bible. Logos is even used to refer to Jesus Himself, the Word of God (John 1:1). Passionately loving Jesus means passionately loving the Word.
All Scripture is God-breathed (2 Tim. 3:16). The words on the pages of your Bible already contain the very breath of God. When you immerse yourself in the text, inviting the Holy Spirit to flow, He will take those words He authored and breathe them into your heart. They will come alive and penetrate your spirit with personal meaning. Logos becomes rhema. At the same time, He feeds your faith. It gets stronger and stronger as He conveys His word to the depths of you.
Feeding on God’s rhema is not optional for a real Christian life. We must have His words to us, or we will die. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (rhema) that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4, NKJV). More than we need our next meal, or even the air that we breathe, we need to hear Him speak. Lord, give us today our daily bread from Heaven! Nourish us with our portion of rhema from Your heart!

One of the considerations you point out here is that the “logos” is not merely the written word. The word itself, logos, means “word, statement, explanation or thought” among other usages. The Greeks used the “logos” in their philosophy predating Jesus by about 400-500 years and Hellenistic Jews incorporated the Logos into their teachings around a century before Jesus, relying significantly on Plato’s teachings.
John basically redefined the Logos to say Jesus is the Statement from Yahweh, the Explanation of all the I AM is.
And from that Logos, the Reason for all existence, comes the rhamata [pl of rhema], His words that are life. “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words (rhamata) that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” John 6:63

Beautifully explained, Jennifer. What became rhema for me this week, was surprisingly from Chronicles – 2 Chronicles 20:15 – 26. When we consult Him, humble ourselves, obey and praise His name, He fights all our battles splendiferously! 😀
