Three wonderful truths leapt out as I was meditating on this passage recently. Holy Spirit was lighting up these phrases for me:
- “Whoever attacks you, does it without my consent…” The spiritual attacks that come against us never reflect Daddy’s desires for us. I like how the NIV translates this too: “If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing.” Holy Spirit likes to remind me that His intention for us was Eden. His deep heart longs for us to dwell in Paradise with Him, free of tears, weeping, and pain. Though He is able to turn everything evil brought against us into something for our breathtaking good, He is never the source of that evil. It’s not His doing. Not His heart.
- “I create the blacksmith, who builds a fire and forges weapons. I also create the soldier…” Whatever spiritual enemies we might have, they are all created beings. Daddy here is asserting His superiority over them. It’s like He’s saying, “I made them. They are My underlings. They are entirely subject to Me. They are on a much, much lower level than the One who’s got you in His hand. So don’t fear them. Don’t be impressed by their weaponry. Don’t be in awe of them. Instead, lift up your eyes to gaze on who I AM, and be in awe of Me. Be impressed only by what I can do. Let your reverence and loving fear of Me set the atmosphere of your inner space!”
- “But no weapon will be able to hurt you…” The enemy simply can’t have you. You belong to Daddy. He fiercely protects the ones that He cherishes. If He caused every last drop of His precious Son’s blood to be poured out for you, how much more will He rescue you from every attack that ever comes against you? If already invested absolutely everything to make you His, will He not care for and defend that which He loves the most?
So if you are in the midst of an attack right now, do not fear. You can rest deeply assured that “whoever fights against you will fall.” Look up and fix your eyes on your Defender. The vindication He has decreed for you is on the way!
Thank you Jenn, this is very helpful. No matter what my circumstances might be, the ultimate control is in God’s hands and His word assures me that He works all things for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
Yet, even with this morning’s reminder, I must admit to times when fear wants to control me. I repent of this lack of faith and find comfort in the words of David: When I am afraid, I will trust in you (Psalm 56:3 NIV).
David, a person after God’s own heart, would sometimes feel afraid. Yet in his fear, He confesses his trust in God. This is a wonderful example for me (and all of us) when fear wants my attention.
Blessings,
Chuck

I am with you, Chuck. Just last night (well, technically, early this morning), I woke up once again partway through my sleep, which has been an issue I’ve been dealing with for over a year (interrupted sleep and sleeping difficulties). I felt anxiety trying to attack me about getting back to sleep, but Jesus helped me turn my heart towards Him and connect with His love. In praying and casting my anxiety on Him, I was eventually able to go back to sleep, and I knew it was a victory from Him!

This is a wonderful post! Reminded me of how God used my own military service for my good. Maybe I will tell that story sometime… The short story is He is always faithful, no matter where we find ourselves.

This is a message I needed to hear, to know that even in the midst of an attack, God is with me. I’ve said it a few times, as have others coming to read the holy spirit’s wisdom spoken here on your blog: thank you for this message I needed to hear today. ❤
