Hidden Manna During Quarantine

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat” (Rev. 2:17, NKJV).

Hidden manna – what is that? Funny that you should ask! Because the thing is, the word manna means “What is it?” The children of Israel were confounded by it when they first encountered it. Manna was strange and new to them. It didn’t fit into any previously known box. And yet, manna was God’s supernatural provision for them in the desert.

Right now, our world is going through a season in the desert. Our verse today from Revelation gives us a promise to strengthen us during these trying times. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat.”

So again, what is hidden manna? If manna was supernatural provision, then hidden manna would simply be hidden supernatural provision. As we press forward in faith during this difficult season, God is going to reward us. As we get alone with Him and seek His face, He is going to “rain down” on us spiritual sustenance that will fortify us for this journey (Ex. 16:4, NLT). Why hidden? It is hidden because it is only found in the Secret Place of Most High. It is only found abiding in Him.

Here is anther key verse about manna: “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord” (Deut. 8:3, NKJV).

Holy Spirit draws a direct line here between living on manna and humility training. The season we are walking through globally is exactly that. He has pulled out from under us so many props that we relied on, and is teaching us complete dependency on Him. Just like it was for them, this is strange, new, unfamiliar, and uncomfortable to us. We haven’t been this way before.

However, in the middle of it all, Daddy is doing something exquisitely beautiful in our hearts, if we are willing. He is teaching us to live off of bread from heaven. He is teaching us to not just survive, but thrive on the words that come from His mouth. That’s why the first half of today’s verse says, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” It’s in hearing Him; in listening to Him; in carving out ample time to be alone with Him, that we receive His hidden manna. This is how we overcome.

When we come alone with Him, He speaks words from His mouth into the depths of our hearts. Each one of these words is living bread. They feed us. They nurture us. They strengthen us. They give us what we need to keep journeying.

Through all of this, He makes everything beautiful in His time. Let’s allow Holy Spirit to draw us closer and closer to Jesus as we wait on Him to heal our world. Let’s let Him train us to rely completely on Daddy; to nestle unceasingly under His wings in the Secret Place. Let’s surrender to whatever precious work He wants to accomplish in us as we rest in His embrace. Let’s receive His daily provision of bread – His very presence – with eager, grateful hearts.

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you’” (Ex. 16:4, NLT).

Do you sense God doing a new, deeper work in your heart through this time of worldwide trial?

  1. Loved the post Jennifer. Read it more than once to make sure I did not miss anything.
I definitely feel the Lord is calling us to a deeper relationship with Him and making us reasses His position in our lives. The stripping away of many things during this time is a call to rethink what truly matters.
    Blessings 😊💙

  2. I wonder more and more about the shape of things once this trial ends. It would be tragic, I believe, if we all simply went back to business as usual, before the virus hit. The pandemic must move us, change us, to be more than we were, better than we were, more appreciative and aware than we were. There will be losses, I do not downplay that; but there can be blessings.

  3. As I watch on television all those heroic people needing to go to work and put their lives in danger for the rest of us, I’ve been thinking about how privileged I am that I’m able to stay safe at home. Many folks aren’t as lucky. So I’m hoping to get better at practicing gratitude.

  4. Jennifer, I trust, that which you speak, may come to fruition. Most everyone on planet earth has an equal opportunity to seek after the one true GOD. Distractions, entertainment and living solely for one’s self has been stripped to necessities. Because our God loves each of us so and is filled with mercy and grace, He allows us to return to Him, repent and begin our lives in a right relationship with Him. What must we do, what must the church do, what must the world do in this time of grief and sorrow ? THE SAME THING ! Repent, seek the Father’s face and surrender to Christ Jesus. Though these are only words in which I can express my thoughts, my heart and spirit cry out, draw us Spirit of God to Yourself as never before. Save us in the midst of this calamity. Yes, make that which the enemy means for EVIL, into a blessing that will forever glorify You, my God. Amen Len
