“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved” (Eph. 2:4-5, NIV).
The other day, I was sitting in the room I use to exercise, taking a breather from my workout. My kitty, Alexander, came in and meowed at me. He wanted some love. I was delighted to give it to him.
As he jumped up onto the chair next to me, Holy Spirit started talking to me. I delight in the way He takes everyday moments and turns them into illustrated sermons for us. As I started petting Alexander, He pointed out to me my cat’s position in life. Essentially, His Spirit-to-spirit communication, as I look for words for it in English, went like this:
“You see how Alexander’s life here in your house is utterly unearned by him? Your family picked him up off the street and brought him in. You adopted him and cleaned him up. You made him feel safe and at home.
“You generously provide for his physical needs with food, vet visits, and an abundance of comfy places to sleep most of his life away. Every time he wants snuggles and pets, your heart lights up to give them to him. There has not been a day of his life that he has lifted a paw to pay for any of the above. Not does the thought trouble him that he should.
“Alexander’s position is like yours. I want you to understand at a deeper level that your place in Me is utterly unearned. You are here with Me simply because your existence brings Me joy. Nothing that you do has any remote resemblance to earning the right to be here. I have irrevocably gifted you your place in My heart. You will never lift a finger to deserve any of it. You get to be here because it makes Me happy. You get to be Mine because I want you.”
(It took me much longer to type that out, than it did for Him to deposit that meaning into my spirit, without any words. I love Spirit-to-spirit messages from Him!) I smiled, drinking in what He was saying to me. As I stroked my purring kitty, my heart just about purred too. Selah. Thank You, Holy Spirit.
“So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy” (Rom. 9:16, NET).
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Rom. 8:31-32, NIV).

Jennifer you have so beautifully expressed what I have felt when I see my little dog. He has reminded me so much of what it means to receive what we have not earned. And I also see how He follows me from room to room and sometimes moves from one couch to the other if I have moved and then proceeds to sleep in comfort as long as he is in contact with me. It reminds me to want to be that close to God always and that should be my place of rest too.
Blessings to you my sister 💙

Amen. Jennifer, thank you for enriching this moment in time with your spirit-to-spirit experience. It reminds me that most of us experience such moments. We may have another name for it, but we feel the grace of the Spirit in any given minute. Indeed, we feel loved and appreciated. Blessings and God’s peace.

A timely message for me. Having a newborn in our house, our child that is utterly dependent on my wife and I (and the many other gracious family and friends) to meet all his needs, has greatly shifted my perspective. My time is no longer solely my own to choose how I spend it.
As God provides all that I need, sometimes even before I realise I need something, we must provide for little Leo’s needs when he requires something. Sometimes that is simply to hold him and let him know he is safe, even if he is crying, seemingly without cause.
God holds me in this way sometimes, and looking after Leo, looking for signs that he needs something we can provide, has reminded of this.
Thank you for sharing this reminder that we are held by God, consistently and always. 🧡🙏
