On the Peruvian Andes, God Speaks

Praying with a precious indigenous woman during our mountain adventure. She received healing and salvation!

“Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you…’” (Zech. 1:3, NIV).

I recently had the pleasure of a quick trip to the mountains of Peru with some dear friends. One of them brought her daughter along, whom I will call Esperanza for the purpose of this devo. Esperanza has in recent months been rediscovering her relationship with Jesus after quite a number of years away from Him. Her time in Peru was a very significant milestone on this journey.

When she heard that I love the subject of dream interpretation, she began sharing with me some of her dreams. As the week went by, she confided several of them to me. Each time, Holy Spirit gave me something to share with her about them. Then, when the time came for us to head to the mountain city of Cuzco, she had a new dream.

Upon arrival, we strolled through the streets of the city as she told me about it. In the dream, she had heard the song “Baby Come Back” playing. There were several other details too, and Holy Spirit unpacked them for me so I could explain them to her. He also gave me several Scriptures to show her that tied into the imagery of the dream.

One of them was “Return to Me, and I will return to you” (Zech. 1:3). The essence of this verse is what Holy Spirit was communicating through the song she had heard in the dream. His Spirit was calling out to her spirit, Dear one, come back to My heart, to My arms!

The main theme of her dream was that He was wooing her to Him. I was able to share with her about how He calls us to continually turn our hearts back to Him, each time we get distracted by the circumstances of life. He eagerly receives us into His embrace each and every time.

About a half hour later, or maybe even less, we were seated in a restaurant for lunch. Esperanza’s eyes got big as she heard a tune begin to play on the overhead speakers. “This is the song I heard in my dream!” she exclaimed. “Baby Come Back” was indeed playing in that very place. What a “random” song to hear up in this mountain town of Cuzco, Peru! We joyfully pointed out to her the obvious: God was confirming His word to her in a very personal way. He was drawing her unto His heart.

We had great fun discussing how God lovingly tailors His communication to each of us. That He would pick a familiar song from her world to speak to her soul just amazed her. Her mom then observed, “God called you ‘Baby.’ That is so sweet.” On top of everything else, in the evening when I went to continue my consecutive Bible reading, Holy Spirit had another surprise for us. I “happened” to come to the very Scripture that I had shared with her that morning pertaining to her dream. It gave me great joy to show this detail to her too.

As I reflect on our girl time in the mountains, I am so grateful for Holy Spirit interjecting His messages into our adventures. You know, He becomes wonderfully talkative when we develop ears that are tuned in to listen for His whispers!

What fun messages has Holy Spirit shared with you recently?
