The Light in Your Eyes

“The light in the eyes [of him whose heart is joyful] rejoices the hearts of others, and good news nourishes the bones” (Prov. 15:30, AMPC).

Do you have someone in your life who fits the above description… a joyful person who carries an inextinguishable light in their eyes? Can you relate to what this proverb says about them – that they rejoice the hearts of others?

I have the pleasure of knowing some individuals like this. What a delight their company is! Their presence brightens up any gloomy, draggy day. When you are enduring prolonged battles, this is the kind of friend you want to have in your corner. Just five minutes around them, and life starts to look like a better place.

Where does one come by such a bounty of joy; such a boon of light-bearing eyes? Let’s take a look at another translation of this verse for some further insight into the matter. “Eyes that focus on what is beautiful bring joy to the heart, and hearing a good report refreshes and strengthens the inner being” (Prov. 15:30, TPT).

First of all, it’s their focus. They have eyes that focus on what is beautiful. Instead of ruminating on all that is wrong with the world, they intentionally fixate on all that is “true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse” (Phil. 4:8, MSG). They carefully guard their ear-gates, eye-gates, and heart-gates, only allowing entrance to that which is lovely.

Above all else, they fixate on Jesus, the beautiful One. This is the continual cry of their hearts:

“One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.”

                 (Ps. 27:4, NIV)

Then there’s the second part of our proverb for today. “…Hearing a good report refreshes and strengthens the inner being.” These joyful-hearted, bright-eyed individuals intentionally make room in their daily lives for good news. In the presence of Jesus, there is always good news. These lovers of Him receive continual good reports from Heaven as they live connected to Him. Their positive perspective flows from their friendship with Him.

Jesus is the most joyful Person you’ll ever meet. The more our fellowship with Him grows, the more you and I will turn into the individuals I am describing here.

Do you think of Jesus as beautiful? Do you think of Him as joyful?

  1. YES!!! I ‘be taken my loving gaze off of Him for entirely too long! But as soon as I return to drawing near, He shows up in such beautiful, wonderful, definite, personal ways to commune with me.

  2. A great question there at the end of this post. I suppose I do think of Jesus as joyful, of a light to the world in many more ways than I can see with my physical eyes. Sharing with others the good news he freely shares with us, over and over again, every day we need to hear it afresh, is the epitome of joy, isn’t it?

Several years ago I tried to reframe my perspective to be ‘relentlessly positive’. Not to ignore the problems in my life that needed solve. Not to realise that I would cause hurt and would need to apologise. Not to try and suppress valid and real sadness and pain I feel for legitimate reasons. But to know that through all moments of our lives there is joy in Jesus. There is a way to know God is with us. There is a way to let the holy spirit continue to guide us. And that this is the *best* way to live our lives. To smile whenever we can. To genuinely smile, more than the one we can show when we’re out for dinner, getting on the bus, or making space as we walk past a stranger on the sidewalk. It is in those moments I really, REALLY, try to put on the most genuine smile I can, because we may never get to smile at this person again, and what impact might we leave with a really genuine smile?

I don’t always succeed at smiling and being genuine, but I try to remind myself in the times I am not that God is with me, and it is ok to remember to smile next time.

Thank you for this beautiful post Jennifer. 🙂 🧡

    1. Aw you are so very welcome, Hamish! I am deeply blessed by your thoughtful response. “But to know that through all moments of our lives there is joy in Jesus. There is a way to know God is with us.” That just went right into my spirit, and I know it’s going to stay with me! Thank you, too, with all my heart!
