Free Water

“And let everyone who craves the gift of living water come and drink it freely. ‘Come’” (Rev. 22:17, TPT).

I know it was not a coincidence that the morning after I composed yesterday’s devo, I had the following dream:

I was thirsty. It was the end of the day, and I had not had any water. I was trying to figure out how to get some. Then I saw my son, David. He had an aluminum can of water in his hand, a good brand. He held it towards me and quipped, “Want a sip?“ He then pointed out that he had gotten it out of the cooler that was on the ground right next to me. He said there were lots of those cans in there, and he had been drinking them all day. I realized that they had been there, accessible and available the whole time, and I just had not realized it or availed myself of this provision.

Sound familiar? We just talked yesterday about how the two disciples on the road to Emmaus finally realized that Jesus had been walking with them all along. My dream is a perfect illustration of this same principle.

Water is a biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit. Jesus invited everyone thirsty to come and drink of Him. He “…stood and shouted to the crowds, ‘Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, “Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.” (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit…)” (John 7:37-39, NLT).

You see, my friend, living water has been served up. It’s right there, within easy reach. Abundant supplies of it. And yet, sometimes we walk through our entire day without reaching out and taking what our loving God has provided for us. We simply haven’t recognized that the infinite source of joy, strength, and satisfaction is right there by our side, immediately accessible.

Here’s another important detail. My son’s name, David, means “beloved.” You are the Father’s beloved. You are the one He loves. You are the apple of His eye. For this reason, He doesn’t want you to go through your activities today feeling dried out and dehydrated. Have you noticed how dehydration causes headaches, grumpiness, and all sorts of other problems? He doesn’t want those for you.

That’s why, in spirit, there’s a “cooler” right there next to you. Are you thirsty? You can have all the living water you need to slake your thirst. Holy Spirit beckons to you right now, “And let everyone who craves the gift of living water come and drink it freely. ‘Come.’”

Come. Dig in. Don’t stay parched. Grab one of those refreshing cans, and drink deep!

  2. Free Water, Free Sunshine, Free Soil, Free Elements that make up everything we know. Until greedy men decided to become SALESMEN. I have a question maybe someone could help me answer? How is it in good faith, …that a person can charge for something that God has given them freely? I’ve been wanting to write a book. But I think to myself, if it’s about God, Deliverance, How to, or let’s say a daily devotional..how will I look God in the eyes and explain this? Am I not them just like those who Jesus threw out of the temple who set up table to trade inside His Father’s house?

    1. Something that we have observed over the years, working with people in Peru to help them come out of poverty, is that our people only value items they have invested some amount of money in. If we give them handouts, the goods received are not stewarded well. So we have learned to make resources like books affordable to them but not free. Somewhere in there is a happy medium 🙂

      1. Not because there isn’t value of what is being offered freely, it’s that we’ve become so conditioned to ‘nothing of value is given freely’ that we tend to disregard what is given freely’.

        Thank you for this reminder. What you work for and then pay for, you also tend to care about more.

  3. question above……..This is a question facing all Christian writers. I know God has given me so much in creative writing. How do I ‘freely’ give what He has given I have free websites anyone can read and even print out the short stories. I absolute need God’s Provision to keep doing this so websites are secure from hacking etc.
    He however has never seemed to be non-supportive if I also sell not in church devotionals and Christian books from a bookstore, His Salvation Message is getting out whether in fiction or other more serious endeavors like www,sacredmusings.com a website or my book to come which is the TRUTH of a life of searching. Blessings
