Servants in on Secrets

“And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew” (John 2:9, NIV, emphasis mine).

Hmmm… who was in on Jesus’ big secret here — the secret of His very first miracle?

The servants.

Let’s never forget this. The greatest in the Kingdom of heaven is the servant of all (Matt. 23:11). Jesus emphasized this groundbreaking truth to us in no uncertain terms.

In God’s value system, greatness is not measured by our visible achievements. It’s measured by our humility. Jesus Himself showed us the way. He did not come to be served, but to serve. He came to model true greatness for us by laying down His life in our place.

When we live this way, in imitation of our Master, we get to see special miracles that are only visible when we go low. From the very beginning of His ministry, we see this pattern woven in. Of all the people at that banquet, it was a select few that got a front row seat to the launching of Jesus’ miracle ministry. It was the servants. It was the servants who were privy to the glory of God revealed. Their eyes got to behold the very beginning of it all.

This remains true for us today. As we follow Jesus and lay down our lives in humble service… we too get in on His secrets. We get to be the closest to what He is doing in our world. We get front row seats. We get to behold His majesty. And He will do miracles through our service.
