You Were Born With Wings

“For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:6, NLT).

A few months ago, my daughter Anna made this for me:

I don’t think she realized that she was communicating to me a message from God. I didn’t even realize it myself until He pointed it out. From His Spirit to my spirit, He conveyed this: “Think about those words. ‘I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky.’ Those are spiritual words from Me to you. You are positioned with Me in heavenly places. In Me, you can soar above the chaos happening below. When you see this artwork, I want you to remember that.”

He whispered it without using English. But that is the meaning that He dropped into my spirit without needing words. Since then, Anna’s gift has been a wonderful visual reminder of my place with Him in the heavenly realm.

This promise is for you, too, my friend. While turmoil is churning in the world around us, we don’t have to stay in the middle of it. We can rise above it on the wind of the Spirit (One of the meanings of Spirit in both Hebrew and Greek is “breath,” or “wind”). He has promised us wings like eagles that can catch this Wind. We need only ask Him to continually train us to use them.

“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.”

(Isa. 40:31, NLT).

Eaglets do not hatch out of the egg knowing how to fly. They have to learn to do what they were created for. Initially, they take baby steps in this direction. For example, they spread their wings and jump from one branch to another. By practice and imitation of their parents, they gradually acquire the skill.

You were born with wings. If you are not mounting up with them yet, do not disqualify yourself. Eaglets are still eagles, even before they are able to fly. Flight is in your spiritual DNA. You, too, will learn as you set your heart to it.

Trust in the Lord. Hope in Him. Wait on Him. Spend time in His presence. Cultivate intimacy with Him. Watch Him. Imitate Him. Stretch out those wings of yours to catch His wind. Take baby steps practicing. Don’t give up until you are soaring high.

You were created to fly. It’s who you are in Him. Believe it. You can touch the sky.

Has the Holy Spirit used something from your daily environment to encourage you? Or has He used your kids to speak to you? I’d love to hear about it!

  1. Thank you for the lovely imagery of flying above the fray on the wind of the Spirit, Jennifer! I’m sitting on our deck right now, joined by a hummingbird at our feeder now and then–total opposites of the large, majestic eagle. Yet what great flyers they are! Our “size” in God’s kingdom doesn’t matter. As you said, we were created to fly!

    1. That is attention-grabbing because I was just thinking about hummingbirds this week, contemplating spiritual principles that might be gleaned from them. And one of the articles I was reading about eagles said that they can hover in place almost as well as a hummingbird. I really like the insight you drew from thinking on the two together. Thank you, Nancy! 🙂
