Small Dust

Earth is His footstool

“This is what the Lord says: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool…’” (Isa. 66:1a, NLT).

Earth, with a measurement of about 24,900 miles in circumference, makes a massive footstool. What kind of God uses such a gargantuan object to rest His feet on? Holy Spirit invites us through this Scripture to contemplate His enormity.

I’d like to share with you a quote from a book about heaven that wonderfully inspired my spirit. It ties right into this concept:

“Again, I never saw God plainly. I was not allowed to see Him except for one of His feet. His foot seemed the size of the United States, and His toe looked the size of Tennessee. I don’t understand how this could be, but this was my impression. These are just my words in an attempt to describe the indescribable.”*

Use your imagination to picture a toe the size of Tennessee. From there, keep on looking. Can you see a foot as wide and long as our vast nation? How high does it reach into the air?

If we can start to perceive with the eyes of our hearts how immense is the One who loves us more than His life, then our souls can begin to find rest. As we contemplate His measureless size, He summons us into deeper revelation of this truth:

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? …Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales; look, He lifts up the isles as a very little thing” (Isa. 40:12,15, NKJV).

Do you see that? He encourages you to “look.” He beckons you to “behold.” He invites you to use the eyes of your heart to gaze on Him. As you do so, consider: If the isles are a very little thing, a trifling for Him to hold in His hand… if the nations are small dust… if the oceans are a drop in His bucket… do you think He might be able to manage your life? Do you think that maybe, just maybe, He might be fully capable to taking on those malignant forces that are coming against you? Could it be that to blast them away with a mere sniff of His nostrils would be effortless for Him?

Not only are the waters, the mountains, and the islands cradled in the palm of His powerful hand, but so are you. Nothing, no nothing, in all of creation can ever remove you from His tender, careful grasp. Not a sparrow falls to the ground apart from His knowledge. Not a flower grows up without gratefully drinking in the glorious sunshine and the refreshing rain that He sends. If He so capably oversees and directs every tiny detail of the universe He created, will He not take perfectly attentive care of you, precious one?

“Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you?” (Matt. 6:29-30,‬ ‭NIV)‬‬

“My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand” (John 10:29, NKJV).

What are some specific ways God has helped you connect with His hugeness? What happens when you picture yourself depositing your cares into His immense, capable hands?

I love such views. We have such towns here. Vast areas with minimum to no lights at night, the view is like a lit globe. Breathtaking and humbling. I relate

  2. This might sound cliche but anytime I do something without praying and then another thing with prayer, there is a recognisable difference. As though I had another presence take charge and control, helping me to accomplish whatever it I was doing with less effort and greater sucess. And surely I know it’s God.

  5. Jennifer, I frequently walk at a couple nearby nature parks. I see, smell, and touch the footprint of God’s creativeness in so many places. Then I realize these two parks are just a small sample in this immense
    universe we live in.
