Has Your Soul Found Its Anchor?

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain” (Heb. 6:19, NIV).

Is your hope firm and secure? Recently, Instagram has been showing me an advertisement for a bracelet with this verse written underneath. The bracelet is shaped like an anchor. When it comes up, Holy Spirit keeps repeating those words to me, “Firm and secure.” It’s uncanny how many times I’ve seen the same ad. There are two possible explanations. One, the advertisers really think I want to buy this particular item of jewelry. Or two, Holy Spirit really wants me to get this message. Smiling. I know what the answer is.

Yesterday we talked about the wellspring of hope: being able to perceive the goodness of Daddy’s heart. Today I want to go a little deeper into this subject. Our verse today contains two separate sets of spiritual pictures. Let’s examine each one closely.

A Firm, Secure Anchor

As we know, an anchor pierces the unstable substance of water, and connects decisively with solid ground. It affixes the boat to what is unshakable. As a result, no storm can remove it from its mooring.

Hope, God’s way, is like this. Real hope, Biblical hope, does not consist of a wistful sigh accompanied by the uncertain words, “Well, I hope so.” The genuine article pushes clear through the instability of your environment or your circumstance, as if through water. It connects you so securely to the steadfast bedrock of God’s character, that no tempest can take you out. Yes, you will experience the howling of the wind and the rocking of the waves. But none of it will move you from your stalwart, solid place.

Access to the Inner Sanctuary

The second half of the verse, with its respective imagery, gives us the “how.” Hope holds the power to penetrate the curtain that separates the visible world from the invisible reality of the heavenly places. This curtain is exactly the reason that most people don’t have authentic, living hope. They can’t see past it. All they see is the physical, material world, with all of its heartache.

Look what the Bible says about us! “Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:16-18, NKJV).

The veil is taken away! When we draw near to the Lord, He removes the separating curtain. He gives us spiritual eyes that can behold His glory. In turn, gazing on Him in the inner sanctuary alters us in a stunning way. Not only is hope born, but hope grows steadily within us as He changes us day by day into His image. The more we behold Him, the more hope grows. Being transformed from glory to glory means that living hope is ever increasing in our lives.

So yes, there will be trials. But the point is not the trials. The point is the unshakable hope being developed in our core, as we walk forward courageously into our destinies! No matter how the wind shrieks, know that He will subject it to the sentence of your victory. No matter how the waves rage against your vessel, know that every one of them will be silenced. Know that not a one of them can take you out. Gaze beyond the curtain, dear one. Gaze into the inner radiant place of His presence that is your very own sanctuary. Gaze and know. Your hope is firm and secure.
