
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Rom. 8:14, NIV).
You and I are led by the Spirit of God. This is a given, once you have surrendered your life to Jesus and received Him as Savior. The moment you did so, His Spirit came to live in you. Holy Spirit is a seal, guaranteeing our inheritance in God (Eph. 1:13-14).
Our Scripture for today is one of many that assure us of the guidance of Holy Spirit in our daily lives. In fact, there are more verses in the Bible promising God’s guidance than there even are promising His salvation (and there are certainly plenty of those too!). We can rest completely assured that His eager desire and promise is to direct our steps.
At the same time, He also takes us through a life-long training course on being led of Him. We get to imitate Jesus, who depended completely on Holy Spirit for everything He did (Acts 10:38). Jesus did nothing except that which He saw the Father doing (John 5:19). In order to imitate Him, we need to learn to do nothing except that which we see our Abba doing. In order to watch and follow what He is doing, we need to be able to see Him.
That’s where Holy Spirit comes in. Jesus told Nicodemus that being born again by Holy Spirit enables us to see the Kingdom of God. So being born of the Spirit is what opens our spiritual eyes. The new birth gives us new eyes to see. Holy Spirit begins to empower us to see into the Kingdom realm. We can begin to perceive the Father and His movements, and follow Him.
