“Jesus, help!”
How many times in life is that all the prayer we can muster? Turns out, this is actually quite a powerful prayer. It connects us right into the Helper nature of God. The Helper is who He is. Moving in to come to our aid us is something that He spontaneously, eagerly does – all the more so when we cry to Him! Helping us is an expression of His very essence. “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’” (Heb. 13:6, NIV, emphasis mine).
As we cry out to God for His help, let’s lift our eyes up to Him. If we keep our eyes on our difficult circumstances, this feeds our fear. Instead, Holy Spirit invites us to shift our gaze upwards: “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Ps. 121:1-2, NASB, emphasis mine).
When we focus in on this essential Helper aspect of His nature, His peace comes to protect our hearts. New strength infuses us. Fear leaves. We hear His beautiful voice speaking to our spirits, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10, NKJV, emphasis mine).
You know what’s even more amazing? The Helper will never once leave you. He is with you forever. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” (John 14:16, ESV). So yes, have confidence as you cry out to your Helper. He is intimately present, aware of your every breath. He is listening intently for your cry, even now! Unfailingly, you will have His help. Every single time.

Can you imagine Jesus’ conversation with the Father, asking Him to give you the Helper?

Amen 🙌

When the only prayer I can muster is “Help!” I refer to it as foxhole spirituality. I’ve decided it’s not such a bad thing.
