“Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does’” (John 5:19, NIV).
If Jesus was fully God when He came to earth, why did He say (above) that He couldn’t do anything on His own?
What an important question! Its answer is one of the most important keys to the way He wants us to live our lives here. Jesus operated in His human body exclusively by the infilling, guidance, and empowering of Holy Spirit. One of the foundational reasons for His life here on the planet was to model for us how to do so too.
“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts 10:38, NIV).
Jesus confined Himself to human limitations when He emptied Himself and became a man (Phil. 2:6-8). In a human body, He didn’t have bionic supplies of energy. He didn’t have laser vision. He had to eat and sleep. He had to rest. And He had to rely completely on His Father through Holy Spirit’s anointing to do anything at all effective for the Kingdom. In all of these ways, He was just like us.
As Jesus went about doing good, He only could do what the Father was already doing. You see, the Father is always at work. Whatever He is doing — at any given time — is immeasurably superior in dimension and power and reach and extent and efficacy, than anything we humans could even begin to muster up. The amazing thing is, He invites you and me to be a part of it.
He calls us to enfold ourselves into what He is up to. We get to join Him in His continual, infinitely powerful, masterfully orchestrated work in this world. Right now, He is holding all things together. He is upholding and sustaining and working in every system that exists. He is mightily, intricately involved in the daily activity of every continent, nation, city, church, institution, family, and individual. He is overseeing every colossal and minute component of all of it, all at once.
As He does so each day, He has a tiny yet eternally significant spot in mind for you and me to join Him in what He is doing. If we say yes to His beckoning, He will lead. If we take His outstretched hand, He will initiate, empower, and execute His plan through us.
Are you ready? Do you see His hand held out to you? Eternally important moments are ahead, my friend! “Spring into action… Has the Lord not taken the lead?” (Judges 4:14, NET).
