The Astonishing Light Inside of You

“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” (2 Cor. 4:7, NLT)

You have an astonishing treasure on the inside of you. That’s right, a jaw-dropping, flabbergasting, mind-boggling treasure. 

You might not feel like you do. It might seem like today is one more mundane day in your ordinary life. You may suspect that there is nothing spectacular about you. Sometimes it’s hard to see the treasure that’s inside of us.

I remember a defining moment I had a few years ago as I was walking down the street in the city of Lima. It was a very run of the mill day. I wasn’t feeling particularly “prayed up” or in sync with the Holy Spirit. There was no spiritual high going on for me, at all.

However, out of the blue, the Lord opened my spiritual eyes. Suddenly I could see a blindingly brilliant light flooding forth from me into the darkness as I walked. I was a veritable blazing torch in the inky blackness!

I immediately knew that the light I was perceiving was Jesus. Not only that, but I also understood that He was showing me that I always shine like this – no matter how I’m feeling – because He is always in me.

Here’s the thing. It had nothing to do with how triumphant or defeated I felt that day. Our God is the Father of heavenly lights and He just IS! He is the great “I Am.” And He IS inside you and me both like that – even on our worst day – because He IS, always!

His brilliance doesn’t dim when we are struggling because it’s HIS not ours. There is no shadow of variation in His radiance, ever, and that radiance has made its home inside us.

Take heart, dear one. Yes, you are a fragile jar of clay. However, this is actually a magnificent arrangement. It takes all the pressure off you and puts the spotlight on the beauty and majesty and splendor of Jesus.

No matter what you are feeling today, with Him on the inside, what a dazzling, resplendent light you are!

“You are the light of the world…” (Matt. 5:14, NKJV)

  6. Several years ago I working as a contractor for a food company in a supermarket and I was asked if I was a follower of Jesus. After I said yes, the woman proceeded to say that she could tell and we had a very rewarding conversation. This is the only time such a thing has happened to me, but I know friends who this happens far more often. I think it is something to do with the joy they seem to emit, at all times, and the joy they seem to have when others are sharing stories with them too.
