Understanding Your Dreams: Warfare During the Night

“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19, NKJV).

We’ve been discussing all the amazing aspects of God’s nighttime communication with us. However, there is a flipside to this conversation. What about bad dreams, night terrors, and nightmares? Where do these fit in? Today we are going to tackle the more difficult side of dream life: warfare dreams. As we discussed near the beginning of this series, dreams can have three sources: our own soul, God, or the enemy. When a dream comes from the enemy, how do we handle it? Let’s talk about that.

First, though, I want to share a hopeful thought with you. A mentor of mine taught me something years ago that I’ve never forgotten. She explained that the more gifted we are in the area of dreams from God, the more the adversary will want to attack us by that same means. The enemy sees the callings on our lives, and they terrify him. He knows how much damage the gifts on you can do to his kingdom. So, guess what, my dear friend. If you have been viciously attacked as you sleep, you probably have an amazing prophetic gift of dreaming!

Continuing our study, here, then, are a few things to keep in mind about such attacks:

36) Sometimes we fight a real, strategic battle in our dream. I have a pastor friend who experiences this from time to time. She finds herself engaging in battle with the enemy while asleep. She vividly sees the enemy she is facing, finding herself engaged in hand-to-hand combat. It’s almost like virtual reality, except it is real. She takes authority and triumphs!

This tends to happen when she is on ministry trips. Local spiritual enemies get angry that she has come to bless the people in the places she visits. They attack as she sleeps, and her spirit, empowered by Holy Spirit, fights back, and wins. I am absolutely certain that the victories won during her sleep pave the way for powerful ministry during waking hours.

37) We grow in using our authority during our sleep. This is exactly the same principle as growing in our authority during our waking hours. I used to suffer from many more spiritual attacks on my dreams than I do now. Just as Holy Spirit trained me over the years to walk in victory over the enemy while awake, He did so for me in my dream life. I believe that as our faith in His absolute might grows, we access the protection available in His blood more and more.

Remember how the children of God put blood on the lintels of their houses and they were protected from the destroying angel? The blood of Jesus, our perfect Passover Lamb, is over the doors of our hearts. His blood provides perfect protection from all harm. We receive and walk in every provision that He purchased with His blood through faith.

Remember, He is the Author and Perfecter of our faith! (Heb. 12:2). You can rest in this. He who began the beautiful work of perfecting your faith will be faithful to complete it in you. (Phil. 1:6). He will train you to be victorious even as you sleep. Ask Him for this training! Ask, and you shall receive (Matt. 7:7).

38) Take communion. Pray over your sleep while you’re awake. Do this at bedtime, but also do so during your regular prayer time. I would strongly encourage you to make the Lord’s Supper a regular part of this special part of your day. This is a powerful practice that has brought much spiritual victory into the lives of my family, many of my good friends, and me. Communion does not need to be reserved for moments when pastors or priests can lead it. Jesus’ body and blood are for you and me, every day of our lives.

Literally “proclaiming the Lord’s death” over your dreams releases the perfect liberty Jesus bought for you into that aspect of your life (1 Cor. 11:26). Keep a stock of communion elements in your bedroom, and participate with a simple, childlike faith. Thank Him for His sacrifice, availing for you. Decree that all attacks against you are broken off by His blood, as you receive it. Declare that your bedroom and household are an angel-only zone. As you make this a regular part of your prayer life, you will see spiritual atmospheres in your home shift in wonderful ways.

Check in next week for one more post on the subject of nighttime warfare! (You can find the beginning of this list here).

  1. Very good writing. This will certainly help a lot of people who struggle to understand their battles. We all have to go through battles as we all have oppositions. Once we accept Jesus Christ the devil will seek to fight us. It is important that the devil do so because it will only help to build us up. God has not given us the spirit of fear so we don’t have to fear when battle comes.
Another thing is that the Holy Spirit will enable us to use the scriptures in our dreams to defeat the enemy.

  2. I needed to read this! Thank you.

I have been hands on battling the enemy in my dreams the last week. I am binding and loosing I am calling the archangels down! Last night I actually seen them! And yes I am victorious in it. But it has been heavy on me, I’m not sure why?
I hope to hear from anyone who can help me! God bless. And thank you again for this.

  3. i have been getting attacked when I sleep in my old room in my parents house. The enemy tries every single way to attack me, by sending someone to try to r.pe me, by sexual desire, monsters, survival situations, even putting me in scenarios of shows I used to watch before devoting my life to Christ. Killing my parents, every single thing.

I even killed one demon in my dream saying the verse from Luke 10:19. I pray before sleeping to guard me and still get attacked here, in my apartment I pray and dont get attacked.

    1. Have you tried praying over the room and anointing it with oil? If not, it could be helpful. Ask forgiveness for any sins committed in the room, and verbalize that you receive forgiveness and your forgive yourself too with His forgiveness, that you are a new creature in Him. Ask for Holy Spirit to wash through it and cleanse it with the blood of Jesus and His rivers of living waters. Take authority over any enemy spirits that had attachments to the room there. Ask the Lord to put angels on guard there permanently.

  4. i was looking online for an answer. Last night I had a dream that there were evil things in the place I was staying in my dream. I understood it was evil. I kneeled down in my dream and asked the Lord to wake me up and I woke up. I am so shaken by this that I’m having a hard time thinking about going to bed tonight. I’ve always had a hard time sleeping. I have to take medication to fall asleep. I have night terrors from domestic violence and trauma in my past. Thank you so much for this post. I really needed it.

    1. Hi Jessie. I am just now seeing your comment because I have gone back to school and haven’t been able to spend a lot of time on my blog. But I am so sorry for all that you have endured. Jesus cares very deeply about your struggles and hurts. He has healed me from some very deep hurts too. A ministry that has meant a whole lot to me is called Sozo, maybe you could look them up? They offer prayer ministry for healing from trauma. This is the general website: https://www.bethelsozo.com/, and this is the tab for signing up for receiving ministry with them: https://www.bethelsozo.com/book-sozo . I’m pretty sure it doesn’t cost anything. I pray that you find Jesus’ healing touch in ways that your soul is longing for. He is such a gentle Healer. You are safe with HIm.

I have to take medication to sleep. I have night terrors due to domestic violence and other trauma. God is definitely good all the time. I was very upset and fearful of sleeping after this dream last night but I understand more now. Thank you!

  6. hi! I have been battling bad dreams for as long as I can remember, horrible dreams, sometimes paralyzing ones where I am unable to move. God had also spoken to me in my dream once. I was just away on a tres Dias Christian women’s weekend serving and did not have one bad dream. I came home and had 3! One for each night I was there. Last night I had another. I am trying to figure out if this is Spiritual warfare or not. This information has been so helpful. Thank you!

    1. Hi Rachel! I am finding your comment belatedly, but you are so very welcome! I pray that Holy Spirit brings you clarity, truth, peace, and freedom in your nighttime rest. I so deeply believe this is His desire and will for all of us, His beloved kids. Did you get a chance to read some of the conversation in the comments too? There is further good stuff in there. Sending you much love and wishing you a beautiful Christmas full of Jesus’ manifest presence, intimacy, and kindness to you!

  7. I was actually reading this at 4am cuz I been experiencing a big battle that’s been difficult to fight. I had a dream 3 times about the same place that’s abandoned where I live and there was like 7 or more demons attacking me. I did noticed the first dream seemed to show a door opening and it caused the demons to wake up cuz then I couldn’t close it. Then when I picked up a knife it burned my hand. They even shapeshifter into my sister and mother and tried to attack me. I remember seeing shadows, a crocked man with a black and white shirt without legs and a crocked dog made of flesh in my bed in the same place so I woke up terrified since it was crawling towards me and because no matter how much a prayed they still came back. But reading this has helped me learned better ways to pray and trust God.

  8. I woke up to find myself swallowing pills My first thought when I came to is why am taking pills I took my night time medicine already. When I woke back up I was not able to walk and had to crawl to get around. My legs were very shaky and unstable. I am having to use a stick to stay upright. This is very concerning to me I can only believe Satan entered my sleep and caused me to take the pills.

  9. I needed to hear this today. I have had dreams from God and the enemy my whole life. God has shown me heaven multiple times , the rapture multiple times and even walk with Jesus while he talks to me surrounded by beautiful northern lights. I’ve had dreams where the devil(some big dragon looking thing) was face to face with me and I told him I wasn’t scared of him. I’ve seen sleep paralysis demon on top of me and I called the name of Jesus and it left. It gives me hope maybe I do have a prophetic gift of dreams? I still need to study pray that God reveals it to me ✝️🙏🏼

    1. It definitely sounds to me like you have a prophetic gift of dreams! That’s very exciting. I absolutely love the description of Jesus talking to you in the midst of northern lights, it sounds amazing! I know He will teach you as you lean into His communication through this very special language of His. Thank you so much for sharing! (very late reply because life has been non-stop since I went back to school).

  10. I’ve been under heavy spiritual warfare. My dreams the most. I never even knew it was really real until this began. Long story short, I married an unbeliever who practiced idolatry. I was praying, holding his hands one day and he started to shake and growl. The next day things got really strange in my house. Light orbs coming in, something overtook my daughter, strange voices from her saying hail satan, then her voice crying for help. It’s a huge story, either way, we started having nightmares and 3 am wake ups. Some nightmares of torture, rape, incest, someone trying to attach me. It’s gotten better since we’ve both done heavy repenting, renouncing, but I still have some dreams of attacks. Not sure what to do.

    1. Hello Ann! There is a ministry called Sozo through Bethel Church in Redding, CA. They have trained people all over the country (and many parts of the world) to help with healing and freedom. I bet you could find them near you if you do a search online. I have been personally immensely blessed and helped by their ministry. May Jesus strengthen you and your precious family, I know He has complete freedom in mind for you!

  11. Jennifer, as one who dreams a lot, I found this very interesting. One bit of “food for thought”: when I took a class in Biblical dream interpretation, I asked the counselor who was teaching it how to tell the difference between dreams from the devil and dreams from God. She said that she knew of nothing in Scripture that indicated the enemy is able to give us dreams that even the unpleasant ones are God’s trying to tell us something. (Warning, conviction, and other things we might be too proud to think about in our waking life…)

Even so, I pray often before sleep, and especially before I or someone else goes into surgery, that the enemy wouldn’t be able to do anything to my mind while I was unconscious.

    P. S. I did once rebuke a demon in my sleep. 😏
