We Don’t Supply the Bread

“Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven’” (John 6:32, NIV).

As a missionary, I find this Scripture wonderfully encouraging. Jesus is assuring us that we are not the ones dispensing what people need. It’s the Father. Our Abba is the One who supplies that which will satisfy the needs and longings of those in our lives.

Moses got to be His instrument, when it came to the matter of manna, the original bread from heaven. He got to be the one to explain to the people what God was providing for them. You and I get to partner with the Father in a similar way. We get to let people know that bread from heaven is available.

This sometimes will be through our words. There will certainly be important moments where Holy Spirit nudges us to say something about Him to someone. Just one sentence may end up being exactly the nourishment their spirit was needing.

Even more often, this bread sharing will simply happen through our presence. As we yield our lives to Holy Spirit’s shaping and maturing process, the light of Jesus will shine through our eyes and our smiles. Those around us will find out about the bread from heaven just be being around us. Who we are is the greatest testimony of all.

Every one of us is in contact daily with people who desperately need His bread. Amazingly, what they need the most is on the inside of you and me. However, they usually don’t even know what it is they are needing; what it is they are searching for. They don’t know yet that they need bread from heaven. It’s not a coincidence that even the name manna, means “What is it?”

“The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. ‘What is it?’ they asked each other. They had no idea what it was. And Moses told them, ‘It is the food the Lord has given you to eat’” (Ex. 16:15, NLT).          

As it was with the original bread from heaven, so it is now. The people didn’t recognize it in the desert, and they don’t recognize it now… until we show it to them. What an extraordinary privilege! We get to introduce people to the bread that will bring life and health and strength to them. We get to let them know about the food that will both make them come alive, and live forever.

Whether or not spoken words come into play in any given moment, Jesus will feed people through our lives yielded to Him. We simply lean into His presence and follow Him moment by moment. As He leads, we interact with the people in our lives. Through those interactions, His Spirit is at work. He is offering spiritual sustenance to the ones He placed in our work and family environments.  

Remember, we don’t have to supply the food. Moses didn’t give the people bread from heaven. Neither do we. God does it… through our surrendered lives.

Can you remember an occasion where you were interacting with someone, and you were surprised by the words of wisdom that came out of your mouth? And you knew it had to be God, putting those words into your spirit for that individual?

      1. ALRIGHT!!!!! The closest I got to a similar situation was a short term missions trip to the Dominican Republic in the early 1980’s with Youth With A Mission—and three years as a home missionary here in the States. GOD BLESS YOU! ❤

  6. It is amazing that we have the answers inside of us and the living bread. There is nothing like the smell of fresh bread that gets people hungry for it. Moldy bread never caused anyone to want to eat it. We have the fresh bread that people long for. Abundant blessings to you Jennifer!

    1. I love how you put this! Truly, there are plenty of individuals that give the impression that Jesus’ bread is not attractive because of the way they misrepresent Him. May He continue to mold us into His image, that we truly give off the fragrance of the fresh Living Bread from heaven!

  7. Yes, I was in the bedroom on Sunday, reading my Bible and felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to tell my daughter and SIL that they nèed Jesus and that their 14 yr
    Old son loves the LORD & nèeds
    Their quidance. I LOVE your podcats And look forward to the
    Audio version so Jesus comes alive through your voice & genuiness of your heart for Him!!

  8. I can’t recall a moment where God was putting words on my spirit to say. But often when I’m writing a blog post I’ll have the idea, but not the specific events in my life or choices I made which will draw out the idea to make it relatable. As one of my good friends, who writes beautiful songs based in scripture says “I am simply the vessel for God to use the pen to put the words on paper.”

    I guess there are different ways God puts His words in our spirit, for in person conversation, written correspondence, writing stories and sermons?

    1. Yes, amen! I have observed that writing is such a great way to hear from God. As I’ve practiced writing down what I sense Him saying, it opens a flow and then I keep hearing more. Great insight here, thank you Hamish!

  10. Thank you! It’s wisdom thinking that is very important to inform about the Warning (Matthew 24, Luke 21, Ap 8, Zechariah Luke 1) before this event comes.

    A miracle happened to me when Jesus appeared, in the form of a thin cross of bread, as a cruciform host appeared, in my glass of clear water, in a clean glass, towards the beginning of this year 2022. I did not have the reflex to take a picture. I had certainly prayed before, that the Lord would bless everything I eat, everything I drink, that He would multiply the nutrients and supplement them with those I needed, and Jesus certainly felt that I needed Him to appear in my glass, both to participate in my healing and to console me from my apparent loneliness, at a time when I was physically alone, in an accommodation in the Cévennes.
