Commit Your Way to Him

Book story

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act” (Ps. 37:5, ESV).

Let’s look at this verse more closely. What can we understand by the words “your way?” This phrase is referring to the way you are going right now. It’s your path. It’s the road you are traveling, your journey. It’s also where you are headed, your destiny. Holy Spirit is inviting us to commit all of this to Him. Now… what does that mean?

It means to entrust Him with it. Put it into His care. Release it to Him in abandoned trust.

Here’s a wonderful exercise to use, towards this end: Visualize your whole life packed into a parcel. Lift up your spiritual eyes to Daddy. Hold out that parcel in front of you, offering it to Him. Visualize Him accepting it from you. Look at the absolute, steadfast confidence and tender love in His face as He takes what you are turning over to Him. Believe and know that He has received your charge. See in His eyes that He assumes total responsibility for it.

Remember His promise. When you commit your way to Him, “He will act.”

He will act on your behalf…. in ways exceedingly, abundantly beyond what you could ask or imagine. You are giving yourself over to the Manager who is brilliant beyond searching out. He will steward what you have placed into His hands with everlasting love, inexhaustible power, and infinite wisdom.

Now, rest. Rest in this unchangeable, unshakable truth: For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Tim. 1:12, NKJV).

Have you committed your way to Him? Good. He is able to keep it safe until that Day.

The previous verse in this Psalm is the rather famous one: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (v. 4). How does this tie in with the instruction to commit our way to Him? What is the relationship between the two verses?

  1. Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
    Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.

    How could we not trust Him or want to commit our way to Him. What are we afraid of, I wonder.
