Our Guide Until Death

Compass on map

“O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood…” (Ps. 71:17, NLT).

“For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death.” (Ps. 48:14, NKJV).

Decisions, decisions… Some are as insignificant as selecting what we will have for breakfast. Others are as crucial as figuring out what vocation to pursue and where to go to college. In the end, though, we are each the sum total of every decision that we have ever made during our time on earth. When God placed in our hands the privilege and responsibility of choosing, He gave us a flabbergasting power.

Innately, we understand the weightiness of this power that we wield. At some of the crossroads of life, we stand still, nearly paralyzed, peering ahead. We stare down the path to the right, and then down the path to the left. We lift our hand over our eyes to shield them from the sun. We crane our necks, trying to see as far down each one as our gaze can possibly penetrate.

A conversation I had with my father in my early years has long stood out to me. Just starting out on the adventure of adulthood, I had arrived at one of those critical junctions. A choice lay before me that seemed to carry the weight of the entire world in its importance. I was anxious, troubled by the gravity of the responsibility to choose well. Whatever I decided was going to set the course for the rest of my days. Would I choose correctly? What if I didn’t? What if I missed it? What if I messed up my whole life?

My dad listened patiently as I expressed my apprehension. I’ll never forget his words to me in response. “‘Niffer,” (the name that only he can call me) he began. The wisdom and kindness in his eyes was already calming me down. “God is much more intent on making sure you get to your destiny, than even you are. He will make sure it happens. Rest in that.”

My dad knew me. He knew that I was seeking after the Lord with all my heart. He also knew his Father. He knew the One that would be my guide even to death. He knew how unfailing His promises are.

God has promised to guide you and me. “From my earliest childhood…” (Ps. 71:17) and “…even to death” (Ps. 48:14). There is not a single day of your life that is not covered by this guarantee!

“The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you’” (Ps. 32:8, NLT).

Trust the One who has promised!
