God’s Christmas Self-Disclosure

Love

“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(Isa. 9:6, NKJV)

Through the prophet Isaiah, the Holy Spirit announced the birth of a Savior. He immediately followed by announcing His name.

What’s in a name? Identity. Christmas is about God revealing His identity to us. Look how many of His names God gave us in the context of the Christmas story:

  1. Wonderful
  2. Counselor
  3. Mighty God
  4. Everlasting Father
  5. Prince of Peace
  6. Dayspring
  7. Jesus
  8. Son of the Most High
  9. Immanuel

These beautiful names are not just official titles; each one of them reveals core attributes of His nature, of the essence of His heart. Our Creator is longing for us to know Him. What great lengths He has gone to, in order for this to be possible!

Jesus was born that night in Bethlehem in order to establish covenant with us. The covenant in Jesus’ blood, at its heart, is about relationship with God. Jeremiah prophetically described the intimacy of God’s new covenant with us: “No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord” (Jer. 31:34, NKJV).

He wants you to know Him. He is drawing you unto Himself this Christmastime. As He whispers each of His names to you, Spirit-to-spirit, He is revealing His heart to yours. “I am Wonderful. I am exceedingly, abundantly more than you could ask or imagine, in every way. I am your Counselor, here to counsel you through every big and little concern that troubles you… with attentive, compassionate, nurturing support. I will be strengthening you through every rough patch and pothole. I will be the Voice nudging you lovingly, powerfully, tenderly, insistently, in the way you should go.

“I am your Mighty God – nothing, absolutely nothing, is too hard for Me! I am your Everlasting Father, your Provider, your Parent, your Confidant, Your Biggest Fan, your Teacher, your strong and gentle Hero. Your Daddy. I am overwhelmingly protective of you and burn with a fire of commitment to see you grow into the freedom of maturity. I overflow, all the time, with fierce affection for you.

“I am your Prince of Peace, governing everything you surrender to Me with a supernatural peace that entirely transcends anything you could understand.

“I am the Dayspring. If you have long been sitting in the darkness, you need no longer do so. A brilliant light has dawned – I am that Bright and Morning Star. Though the night may seem long and your weeping unending, I am the joy that comes in the morning! I am your healing! I am your redemption! I am Jesus, the Son of the Most High. Every minute of every day of your life, I am your Savior. I will always save you, always forgive you, always cleanse you, always help you, always deliver you. Always!

“I will never, ever, ever leave you. I am Immanuel. I am here. I am with you. To the very end of the age. Always.

  1. It is a astounding truth… as with Joseph and Mary – “unto us the child is given…” what we do with this precious gift, how we receive Him, how we hold Him and how we treat this unspeakable gift is the eternal question to which we must all give an account.

“A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel…”

May we present Him more fully this coming year.

    Blessings
