Can Your Heart See How Good He Is?

“I am certain that I will see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living” (Ps. 27:13, HCSB).

What does it mean to you, to see the Lord’s goodness? Probably the first thing that pops into most of our minds would be, to see a specific outcome in our current circumstances… one that would reflect how kind and loving He is, one that would be evidence of what amazingly good care He takes of us.

Yes. Solutions to our current problems, resolutions to our current difficulties, and fulfillment of our current longings… all of these would be concrete ways that we could see His goodness in the land of the living. However, I believe there is an even deeper nuance here that Holy Spirit wants to bring out for us.

It’s this. Seeing the Lord’s goodness means to perceive with the depths of our spirit how utterly good He really is. It means to come to know His character in a way so intimate that our current problems and difficulties can no longer move us from our mooring. It means that we become so profoundly rooted in the personal knowledge of His love that His goodness becomes our defining reality.

This deep heart knowledge of His goodness then becomes our fountain of hope. When the very core of us can keenly perceive the beauty of His goodness, hope will bubble up from within us like an infinite spring. One so loving, so good, so generous, so kind… has us in His hands forever. All is well.

This truth ties directly into the following verse: “Wait for the Lord; be courageous and let your heart be strong. Wait for the Lord” (v. 14). When every cell in your being knows how good He is; knows how tenderly and how fiercely committed He is to you, you can wait on Him with courage. Your heart can find mighty strength in Him as you wait for His goodness to manifest in the land of the living.

The Hebrew here for the word “wait” is qavah. It also means “to tie together by twisting*.” I love how The Passion Translation renders this verse: “Don’t give up; don’t be impatient; be entwined as one with the Lord.”

Be entwined as one with Him. Wrapped up in beautiful intimacy with the One who is the embodiment of goodness. Every day, coming to know His goodness in deeper and deeper ways. Overflowing with hope in the knowledge of Him, even as we wait.

“I am certain that I will see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living.”

As you have waited on the Lord for His intervention in difficult circumstances, what are some of the things He has taught you? Have you come to know His goodness more deeply?

  1. Amen. Yes, I used to have a very hard time saying things like “God is good” and “glory to God.” I was just really in the flesh, but the more I get to know Him as a believer, the more His goodness just becomes so obvious — by His Spirit, I long to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!!!

  2. Jennifer, Wonderful post, thank you! Psalm 33:20-22 sums it up for me: We wait in hope for the Lord, he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you (NIV)
The lesson I am ever so slowly learning is to rejoice while waiting. This goes hand in hand with thanking God, as we pray, trusting that His answer will always be the best.
Always a blessing to spend a few minutes with you my friend!
