“My child, if you receive my words…
by making your ear attentive to wisdom,
and by turning your heart to understanding,
indeed, if you… raise your voice for understanding –
if you… search for it like hidden treasure,
then you will discover knowledge about God.”
(Prov. 2:1-5, NET)
Have you ever encountered someone who is an amazing listener? Someone who knows how to ask just the right questions to draw out of you the deep waters of your heart? Did their genuine interest in who you are cause things to slip out of your mouth that you had never anticipated sharing?
Daddy God actually is similarly inspired to open up His heart to those who demonstrate fixated, wholehearted interest in who He is. He loves to be pursued. Do you know that if you become an expert listener in God’s company, you will hear things that you never imagined He would share with you?
I want to share a little tip with you that has helped me steward the treasury of His personal messages to me.
I have found that the Lord will often drop little nuggets into my spirit in spontaneous moments of my day. Usually it’s right in the middle of my mundane routine. I might be exercising, or en route to an errand, or checking my email. In the midst of my activity, I suddenly hear Him. I’ve learned to pay attention to His very subtle whispers.
Often, He doesn’t even fully use English words. We humans need words to communicate with each other; we encapsulate our message into words, and the words transfer the meaning from the speaker to the receiver. However, since God lives inside our spirit, He doesn’t even need words. He drops the meaning right in, Spirit-to-spirit, often without encasing it in specific words. It kind of reminds me of getting an injection instead of needing to swallow a pill. It’s more direct.
So the tip is this: as soon as my spirit picks up on His communication, I grab my phone. I have a note with an ongoing list of His words to me on there. I quickly add to my list whatever His most recent message is. It’s usually one or two sentences long. (I often have to lean into His help to actually put it into English since He didn’t use words in the first place!)
Later, when I have the opportunity to do so, I transfer the note by hand into my journal. In this way, I show Him that I am cherishing absolutely everything He wants to relay to me. I make sure none of His precious rhema to me slips through the cracks.
Daddy is actually pretty talkative, when you are a hungry listener. The more you treasure His thoughts, the more He shares His heart with you.
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me…” (Prov. 8:17, NKJV)
Jennifer, thank you. We must open our eyes to see – we must open our mouths to speak – our natural ears are always open to hear that around us. We must ask the Holy Spirit to open our spiritual ears that we are made able to hear the words in the Father’s language. Those special words that fill our hearts and souls with love, truth, joy, comfort, wisdom and direction. Yes, if we value what our God in heaven has to say, we will earnestly desire this each day and make every effort to retain that which is spoken. This is the day that the Lord has made – I will rejoice! len Wisniewski

That’s a very interesting point Len, that our natural ears are already open. And yet even in the natural, hearing is not necessarily equivalent to listening. In the physical realm just as in the natural we need to train our attention on a specific voice or sound in order to absorb the intended message 😊. And AMEN to rejoicing in this wonderful day!

Thank you. The Shepherd knows the voice of His Sheep and His Sheep will know the Shepherd’s Voice but it is as you have beautifully expressed it is important to LISTEN. Abba. Father indeed speaks but often Spirit to spirit not usually with words of English in the ear but words of love through the heart. Instructions always aligned with His Word I have known to be very clear but more a certainty in my spirit and very very real. Yes, connecting with the Beloved and training our attention to listen to His voice or sound is vital. A-men and rejoice in this unfolding day!
