Audience of One

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Gal. 1:10, NIV).

This verse makes an extremely strong statement. It’s reminiscent of Jesus’ bold declaration that no one can serve two masters (Matt. 6:24). We just are incapable of doing so. We’ll either “love the one and hate the other,’ or vice versa. Such intense wording!

We cannot serve Mammon and the Lord simultaneously. Likewise, neither can we dedicate ourselves to people-pleasing, and pleasing God, simultaneously. If we are positioning our hearts and lives in the pursuit of human approval, we are going in the opposite direction than that of serving the Lord. We can’t do both.
