This verse makes an extremely strong statement. It’s reminiscent of Jesus’ bold declaration that no one can serve two masters (Matt. 6:24). We just are incapable of doing so. We’ll either “love the one and hate the other,’ or vice versa. Such intense wording!
We cannot serve Mammon and the Lord simultaneously. Likewise, neither can we dedicate ourselves to people-pleasing, and pleasing God, simultaneously.
