
“Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does’” (John 5:19, NIV).
If Jesus was fully God when He came to earth, why did He say (above) that He couldn’t do anything on His own?
What an important question! Its answer is one of the most important keys to the way He wants us to live our lives here. Jesus operated in His human body exclusively by the infilling, guidance, and empowering of Holy Spirit. One of the foundational reasons for His life here on the planet was to model for us how to do so too.
“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts 10:38, NIV).
Jesus confined Himself to human limitations when He emptied Himself and became a man (Phil. 2:6-8). In a human body, He didn’t have bionic supplies of energy. He didn’t have laser vision. He had to eat and sleep. He had to rest. And He had to rely completely on His Father through Holy Spirit’s anointing to do anything at all effective for the Kingdom. In all of these ways, He was just like us.
