“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Prov. 18:10, NIV).
Are you needing to feel safe today? This is one of the most fundamental needs we have as humans. You know, though, where the ultimate safe place is? It’s in Jesus. In the crazy world we live in today, the only way to feel fully, entirely safe is in His arms.
Being safe in Jesus doesn’t mean that bad things are never going to happen anymore. Instead, His presence becomes insulation to all fear. His “wrap-around presence” secures us inside His perfect love that casts out fearfulness (Ps. 62:2, 1 John 4:18, TPT). Jesus showed us what this looked like when He took a nap during a storm that felt lethal to everyone else around Him (Matt. 8:24). He was wrapped up snugly in the Father’s love, and He knew both He and they were safe.
Our verse for today teaches us that we can run into His name and experience that safety our souls crave. What does that mean? Clearly, the “fortified tower” Holy Spirit describes for us is not a physical structure. Instead, that tower is His name. That is, the revelation of who He is, of His character, of His nature.
When we draw near to God, He reveals to us that He is a safe place for us to hide inside. He reveals His heart to us. We can let down our guard in the Presence of the One who loves us with an unbreakable, unconditional tender affection. We learn that He is protective of us. We learn that He is a shield around us. We learn that He holds our emotions with utmost care as we entrust them to Him.
Knowing He was about to be arrested and crucified, Jesus spent His last evening both speaking hope to His disciples, and praying for you and me. He closed out that supplication of His to our Abba Father with these words, “I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:26, ESV).
If there was ever a night the disciples’ sense of safety was going to be shaken, it was that night. I am convinced this is why a prayer about the Father’s name was the very last line of His prayer. That was the hour His friends were going to need His name, His tower of strength, like never before.
Today, if you are in a storm that feels lethal, there is perfect safety in the revelation of God’s name. Ask Him to make His name, His nature, known to you. Ask, beloved child of God, and you shall receive. It is His great delight to make Himself known to you and me!

Have you come to know Jesus as your safe place? If so, how do you experience that? How would you describe it?

Jennifer, the verse from Proverbs and your opening paragraph speak to me. I try to keep myself free from the world’s noise, but sometimes I need a calm place to be. Jesus always offers a safe, quiet spot.

I am so deeply glad that it spoke to you, Richard. He is such a beautifully peaceful, restful, safe place for us, our refuge and strength. I was struck by the timing, of how He had me post this just before the war broke out. I was able to share it with some friends that were in Israel visiting when it all started. I’m so deeply grateful for the Holy Spirit!

I am recently seeing that I built my own fortifications that kept me imprisoned and unable to fully take refuge in Him. Now He is helping me to dismantle those self-made structures, so I can rely only on Him. He is the only place of safety. x
