Your Own Eyes Will See Him

“I know that my redeemer lives… in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!” (Job 19:25-27 NIV).

Job prophesied the above words over himself. Not only that, but he did this prophesying during the worst moments of his life. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you everything that had gone wrong for him. His suffering is the most notorious of the Bible, and perhaps of all of human history… as is his healing and restoration!

Twenty-three chapters later, this prophecy of his had come to pass. Overcome by the encounter he had just had with the Almighty, he uttered, “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5, NIV). How amazing is that? He was living out what he had declared by faith. Faith had become sight for him.

Obviously there is immeasurably more than could fit in a short devo, that we could glean from Job’s story. So, I will content myself with sharing just a few thoughts on it for today:

  • During our darkest moments, speaking words of life over ourselves is essential. Even if through clenched hands and gritted teeth, let’s get to prophesying the goodness of God over ourselves! When you are going through the storms of life, declare over yourself that you are going to see God showing up for you with your own eyes. You, and not someone else, are going to see Him!
  • Job did not hold back from also expressing his anguish to God. It is entirely possible to wrestle with extremely difficult emotions, asking God the hard questions AND to speak life over yourself and your future. Both/and. Being raw and honest with God is not mutually exclusive with clinging to His promises for dear life. On the contrary, these things go together in vital ways.
  • When Job’s declaration over himself came to pass, it came with full restoration of everything he had lost. As you push through achingly difficult seasons, remind yourself that this is not the end of the story. Not only will you see God come through for you, but He will make up for all you are going through right now. Absolutely all of it.

Nothing can replace our own personal journey with Jesus through the valley of the shadow of death, and out the other side. It’s through that valley that we get to see Him for ourselves. My friend, the other side of that valley is up ahead.

You are going to get there. When you do, you, too, will be able to burst out with, “Now my eyes have seen You, Father!” You will be able to fall down in awe at the ways He rights what is wrong and heals what is broken. You, yourself, and not someone else, will be able to proclaim His faithfulness in your very own life!

  1. You are right about this!!! ”Nothing can replace our own personal walk with Jesus”. To understand God’s Love and Compassion we must have Faith in Him. Because otherwise we will find ourselves in ONE maze with NO EXIT from which we will get lost. God’s Way seems difficult, but if we cling to Him and have good communication we will make it.🙏

  2. “Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you” still applies today. The inheritance is as personal as our relationship with Him.

  3. Excellent Jennifer! Truth from God’s Word and a reminder to prophecy over myself, my family and my country. There is so much power in what we say, especially when we speak His words.

  4. There was a time that I thought the Book of Job foolish. I spent years as an atheist as a result of child abuse, blaming God for all innocent suffering in this broken world of ours. Thankfully, He restored my faith. I have loved this passage in Job for many years.

  5. Sis, as I was reading your post, I Corinthians 13:12 came to mind: “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” I’m in good health, and I believe our Lord has more for me to do here, but I am so looking forward to seeing my Savior face to face and knowing fully!

  6. Amen! Our own eyes miss so much when we are dealing with anguish and trials. When I was dealing with a job layoff years ago, God used these anxious times to better prepare me for the challenges yet to come in my life.
