Putting It On — Let’s Practice!

It’s audio devo day!

I was under the impression that we were done with The Armor of Light series last Friday… but I was wrong! Holy Spirit began to stir my heart with one more episode on this topic after I released that last one. Today, our audio devo is a special edition for the exclusive purpose of practicing together – practicing the art of putting on the full armor of God.

Do you remember the intro to this series? We started out meditating on this verse that prefaces our Ephesians 6 instructions about suiting up with God’s armor: “…Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (v. 10, NKJV). Putting on the armor is about putting on His strength. God does not command us to be strong in our own power, but rather to be strong in His. As we put on each piece, we are slipping into God’s own strength. Wearing the armor is about a posture of receiving: we are receiving from Heaven God’s provision of might for our battles.

Putting on the armor, my friend, is not a work of your own strength. You don’t have to strive or strain at it. You just get to open up your spirit to the Holy Spirit and tune into what He is handing to you. This brings to mind a Scripture about one of the most decisive victories recorded in the history of the world:

“But Moses said to the people, ‘Don’t be afraid. Stand your ground, and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never ever see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you. You just keep still.’ 15 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to get moving.’” (Ex. 14:13-15, CEB, emphasis mine).

Do you notice the contrast between verse 14 and verse 15? “Keep still… Get moving.” How is this not a contradiction? Beautifully, we learn from this that oftentimes, the way to move forward in God is to keep still on the inside and let Him fight for you. I love how the AMPC renders it:

“The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest. 15 The Lord said to Moses, Why do you cry to Me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward!”

The way forward is to remain at rest. The way into victory is to abide in God’s peace. He is going to fight every one of our battles for us! So as we put on the armor, we do so keeping this fundamental truth in mind. We put on each piece knowing that God Himself is dressing us in His glorious light. He is wrapping us up in the power of His might. He is clothing us in the victory Jesus won for us at the cross.

So come on, let’s practice together! Grab your armor and join me here:

Can you tell a difference in your day when you put on the armor of God in the morning?
