Creation Is Talking

“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature” (Rom. 1:20, NLT).

God longs to be known. This is why, when you and I take a good look at creation, we see truths about Him. Art always gives us a window into the soul of the artist. God’s stunning art, His creation, speaks of Him. He puts visuals in our world that point us to His inherent characteristics. Through them, He reveals aspects of Himself to us. Consider these, for example:

On a blisteringly hot day, you come into the house sweating and desperately thirsty. The immense relief you find in the drink of a cold water that you grab from the fridge – that speaks of Him. His Spirit is living water. Just as that craved-for glass of hydration cools you, replenishes you, and revives you, so does His presence. His Spirit will refresh you with new vitality as you come close and drink of Him. His creation of thirst-quenching water tells us about His nature.

He gives us water in many other forms to continue to reveal Himself. Think about the endless ocean. What a picture of His immeasurable love! You gaze and you gaze, and you can never see the end of it. It stretches out beyond the limits of your physical ability to see. So does His love for you. You will never be able to see the end of it. You may swim in the ocean. You may dive deep into it. Even if you went deeper than any scuba diver ever has, you would barely be getting into a small fraction of its depths. Even this is an incomplete picture of His love; His love is infinite, whereas the ocean does have a bottom. However, He knows we can’t wrap our minds around infinity. So He gives us a smaller glimpse so that we can at least begin to understand.

And He continues to speak. The power of Niagara Falls tells us a similar story.  They pour out more than 700,000 gallons of water per second, rushing over the Falls at around 25 miles per hour. No one ever worries about making sure these Falls are supplied with what they need to show off such majestic volumes of aquatic glory. It just keeps coming, endlessly and effortlessly. This is how God loves you. Love for you is perpetually rushing from His heart in immeasurable, mighty volumes. You can’t even begin to hold it back!

And He speaks on. Currents of electricity… lightning that sets the sky ablaze… the splendor of the rising sun… the mesmerizing rhythm of the tide… the morning song of a bird receiving the day… the caress of a summertime breeze… a single flower growing up through a crack in the sidewalk… a burst of cheerful color on a cloudy afternoon… the delighted laughter of a baby… the glowing smile of greeting from the one you love…

All of these talk to us about the essence of our tender Creator. Everywhere you look, you will see Him. As our passage for today points out about everyone who has ever observed His creation: “They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them” (Rom. 1:19, NLT). When we take in with our five senses what He has made, His nature is unmistakable. His creative power is limitless, and He uses it to show us how deeply He loves us. He put all of His love energy into fashioning a breathtakingly beautiful place for us to thrive.

In closing, let’s soak in David’s worshipful words expressing this truth:

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
their voice is never heard.
Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world”
(Ps. 19:1-4, NLT)

Creation is pouring forth speech, telling us about the One that loves us best. Are we listening?

    The Lord makes His wisdom and Himself obvious. Conspicuous. Blatantly in your face.

    However the heart is a wicked thing. This is why Abraham told the rich man even if he sent Lazarus to his brothers, if they didn’t believe in the words of God, they wouldn’t believe even if they saw a man risen from the dead.

    1. Wow, John, I really like how that Scripture ties in with these truths. Thank you SO much for sharing it! You really have added another layer of insight here that is so vitally important. When humans refuse to see/acknowledge the witness God has put about Himself into the world around us, which obviously happens frequently since Jesus said that few are those who find the narrow way. I am truly grateful for your sharing!

      1. The Bible says that those who choose not to believe corrupt themselves in foolishness. The evidence of God’s existence is so obvious that one must corrupt themselves in complete foolishness, in essence burn their consciousness to callousness in order not to believe.

  2. So funny! I came across this verse-Romans 1:20, this past weekend and just about used it for my photography post!

    I loved your example of Niagara Falls. I struggle with understanding the depths of His love. I love this post. It’s an excellent reminder.

  5. Jenn, I have been blessed to stand on the shore of the both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans as well as to have witnessed Niagara Falls but have never considered these wonders in the context that you have put them in today. God’s never ending, limitless love! Thank you for this.
    Living near the shore of lake Ontario, we are often privileged to see the wonder of His creation in spectacular sunrises and sunsets. They are breath-taking, I will will go forward now remembering His limitless love when I see them.

    1. Joyful chuckle, How do you do it, Chuck? How do you make me smile joyfully with just about every comment that you share here? I love this!! Reminds my spirit of when I had the joy of going on a missions trip to Botswana at age 19. On our day of rest, we got to go on a safari. As I was taking in the beauty, I heard Him whisper to my spirit, “I made this for you!” Isn’t He AMAZING??

  9. God speaks clearly to me in creation – especially through the bird kingdom. Just after I moved to my new home, He blessed me with a sighting of not one but four Knysna turacos! I can’t work out how to put in a link but if you google the name there are some fantastic pictures. I knew then if there was ever any doubt, I had made the right move. I have been here happily all through the past year and it has been a lovely place to be. A blessing and a gift of God! Thanks for this great post. Amen, I say, Amen!   10. Amen. Who could doubt a majestic, boundless, loving, Creator, when we observe even just a glimpse of His creation here and outwards into the universe, known and unknown… His humour, intelligence, care, majesty and design… I’m so grateful that we have eternity to begin to fathom it.

  12. Yes, the Lord speaks to us through His creation. I think that’s why I love being out in nature so much; it seems like my best times of worship are when I’m praising Him out there for something He’s made. In addition, the sounds of nature, whether animals, flowing/rushing water, or something else, are some of the best things in life!
