“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come” (Matt. 24:6, NIV, bold emphasis mine).
Jesus was prophesying some intensely chaotic, turbulent, painful times in this passage of Scripture. He gave these predictions as signs to look for as we draw near to the end of time. It seems logical that such forecasts would cause us alarm. Yet, contrary to logic, He in the next breath admonished, “See to it that you are not alarmed.” Here are a few observations about this surprising instruction:
- He is handing us a responsibility. “See to it” clearly implies that the ball is in our court. It’s up to us to decide to walk in courage, even in the face of great difficulty.
- He really means it. Which means that it’s entirely possible. His command carries, intrinsically within itself, the power to carry it out. He truly is calling us to live fearless lives. Yes, fearless lives, even surrounded by others drowning in an atmosphere of fear. Jesus also foresaw that the hearts of those around us may “fail from fear” (Luke 21:26) because of what is transpiring in the last days. In the midst of such a great shaking, He is making available to us an anointing of great courage. His mantle will empower us to live out our daily lives in valiant, intrepid confidence.
- Peace is a supernatural power. As we walk in His peace that transcends all understanding, we will stand out brilliantly in our generation. This peace, this mantle of courage, can only be found in His presence. As we make daily intimacy with Him the supreme priority of our existence, then, and only then, will we see Isaiah’s prophecy come to pass:
Fearlessness will make us a brilliant light that attracts the nations to Jesus!
