The God Who Sees You

“Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees, for she said, ‘Have I also here seen Him who sees me?’” (Gen. 16:13, NKJV).

Do you feel overlooked? Do you feel like the proverbial kid not getting picked for the team, on the P.E. field of life? Do you feel invisible? Do you wonder if anyone really, truly sees you?

God does. He is the God-Who-Sees.

I love the story our verse comes from today. The woman speaking these words is Hagar. Hagar the underdog, Hagar the downtrodden. Hagar, the symbol of Abraham and Sarah’s blunder. Hagar, the one cast away.

Most of us would easily brush her aside and be done with her. Who wants a reminder of past failings? Once Abraham sends her off into the desert, we are ready to do so too.

Hagar is a symbol of all who have ever felt unseen. She represents those who have received the brunt of other people’s mistakes. After all, she did not ask to be sent in to sleep with the patriarch. And yet, she was the one suffering as a result.

God saw Hagar when she felt invisible. He saw her heart and knew that it was empty. And so He gave her a dream to hold onto. “Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, ‘I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude’” (v. 10, NKJV).

He gave her hope. He is the God of hope. He has hope for you today too. The same God who was paying close attention to Hagar is paying close attention to you, and wants to breathe hope into your heart. He begins by telling you that you are, indeed, seen!

Just how much does He see you? We are not talking about a quick glance in your direction. No; the Psalmist reveals the incredible extent of God’s personalized focus on each of us:

This attentive God saw Hagar. And He sees you. He cared deeply about her loneliness; He cares deeply about yours too. Just as He provided for her, He will abundantly provide for you, dear child.

If your heart has been feeling empty, Daddy has a dream to fill it with. In the midst of your unjust circumstances, He has glorious hope with which He wants to fill your spirit to overflowing.

So it’s time to look up… Look up and see the One who sees… gazing back on you. His eyes tell the story of the mind-boggling dream He has for you…

“For she said, ‘Have I also here seen Him who sees me?’”

  1. Wow I couldn’t agree more my friend. This also reminds me that I must catch up on alot more of your devos. Hearing you speak on these subjects is like the conscious alarm clock of everyday life; it soulfully wakes me up hahaha.

    I also need to seriously follow up on some of these passages you took inspiration from, but thanks for sharing your virtuous thoughts on this matter Jenn.

      1. Hahaha that is super terrific, it is awesome to see that you were ahead of the game sista; being able to schedule posts ahead of time is a super convenient feature 😂😂.

        I am glad that you were on vacation and I hope you loved it and I hope that you will get to experience more, and I had a splendid thanksgiving holiday; it actually was a lot better than I expected when taking the pandemic situation into account lol

      3. Absolutely you are so right Jenn, I don’t think it could have gone any better for us, it was a splendid occasion haha.

        It was like how you so marvelously described my other comment — lots of good stuff packed in to a small package. There was not even a hint of despair, it was like a deciduous blossoming of prospects 😄😄.

      7. Wow when I think about what this truly means, it’s cool beyond words.

        Right now we are still in the shadows; the human nature is still in the dark so to speak. We have our own system of time and we know what a real physical day looks like, but a real day for us is the day where the light of righteousness is fully reflected upon us. We are not fully there yet but with his path, this blessing is slowly setting on the Horizon.

      1. Good for you, Jennifer. Hope you had a wonderful time.We’re still in lockdown here in Italy. We can only leave our homes for work, medical, neccessities, and church. But I’m glad you’ve got more freedom!! Take care.

      2. It’s an unusual thing here in Iquitos. An estimated 93% of our local population has had covid, so we are definitely at herd immunity, have been for a while. It came at a high price, but we are there. I am glad you are able to go to church though. Is it at limited capacity?

  5. Bless you, beautiful Lady. Powerful stuff. Some of us Hagars have preferred to hide, but are desperate for God to see us, but only if He will accept – He is our only hope. The head knows He accepts, but… for some of us it can many years to build that trust.

  8. Being taller than six feet I seldom feel physically unseen. But, I often feel like I don’t express my wants and needs outwardly so they go unseen—because I haven’t taken the step of letting people know what they are!

    Recently I have started reading a book called ’11 Days’ by the author Mark Holloway (I think he’s a New Zealand author). It has a really interesting and simple way of engaging in conversation with God, equal times of talking and listening. I’m slowly finding out that, for me at least, to be seen I need to step out of my comfort zone a little bit and express my opinions and perspectives in a healthy and productive way.

    As always, thank you for the encouragement to remember God is at the centre, and He always sees us. Go well into 2021, my friend.
