Perfect Peace

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isa. 26:3, NKJV).

A few years ago, I had a dream in which I was on a wild elevator ride. Instead of vertical motion, this elevator had me travelling horizontally at a crazy speed. It was rocking to and fro as it moved, and the door was open.

And yet, I was lying peacefully in bed inside the elevator, unfazed.

Today, Holy Spirit reminded me of this dream. I sensed His nudge to share it with you. Maybe you can relate to the imagery. Have you felt like you’ve been on a wild ride this year? Like things have been careening forward on an unfamiliar track? (Whoever heard of an elevator traveling horizontally??). Have things been hurtling in a direction you never anticipated? Has everything been going “sideways?” Have you felt rattled to and fro with the movement of it all?

I’m pretty sure all of us have felt this way on some level during 2020.

And yet, that bed in my dream. That’s His message to us for today, I believe. What does a bed represent here? Well, consider the faith you have in your own bed. Do you trust it to sustain your weary frame at night? Do you ever worry about whether it will hold you up when you collapse into it? Probably not. Generally we take that for granted. This is why we can release ourselves into deep sleep. We let ourselves go completely to our beds. We eagerly abandon ourselves to their stalwart reliability.

So here’s our invitation. I sense Him beckoning us to trust Him like we trust our beds. You know, He loves you way more than your bed even does. His strength won’t fail you when you crawl into His arms. He is always, always, always there. He is inviting us to the level of abandon to His love where we can truly let ourselves go completely into His care.

Here it is again: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isa. 26:3, NKJV, emphasis mine).

Perfect peace. Wow. It’s a real thing. It really exists. Where does it come from? Trust. Real peace comes from real trust.

I find that when my heart starts getting uneasy about something, it’s usually because I’m trying to carry it myself instead of entrusting it to the Father’s care. As soon as I turn it over to Him, His peace comes back and settles over my heart once again. It’s that Philippians 4 exchange: “…Let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7, NKJV). I hand Him my concerns, and He hands me His perfect peace. I think that’s a pretty amazing bargain.

Another thing about this matter. You know how it is when you have someone reliable in your life that you trust completely? For one thing, when they tell you they’ll do something that you are needing their help with, you don’t give it another thought. You know it’s a done deal. I believe Daddy God would like us to know, deep in our hearts, that He’s that kind of Person. What He has committed to you is just that: a done deal.

What’s even better about having someone like that close to you – they become your safe space. Your heart is beautifully at rest when they are around. That’s how it is with God. He is your ultimate safe place. Your heart can rest secure in Him. Deeply so.

No matter how crazy the ride is right now, snuggle into your safe place. His unwavering support will never, ever collapse under you. His everlasting arms have got you. Let yourself go completely to His tenderness for you. You are safe, dear one.

  3. To fully trust someone, we must be willing to abandon ourselves fully to them. Only God is worthy of such trust. In this world, filled with sin, we will be let down time and again. I must say, since receiving Jesus as my Lord and Saviour, I have never been let down by the promises in the Word of God. Sometimes, we are not aware of His steadfastness and faithfulness until “after the fact”. I pray often to be faithful in the lives of others and always to my Lord. Amen Len Wisniewski

  6. A wonderful post. The elevator is real to me this week. Pressure on me to do health protective stuff. PEACE comes when we come to the place of KNOWING that personal surrender to God is more important than all the possible ‘ might happens’ even health professionals hurl at us. ONLY GOD is Sovereign! Our ultimate safe place indeed. A-MEN and thank you for writing J.

I think trust is difficult because most of us have had so little experience of it in our lives from human persons, and often, critically, from those in authority and on whom we are often dependent, so we learn to cope in our own wacky ways, which make sense to us. Our heads know we can trust God, but there often isn’t enough substance in us to back that trust up with our heart, soul and strength. (Only my understanding, from my perspective)
