Call to Me

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jer. 33:3, NKJV).

Yesterday, in a moment of intense emotion, I asked God a question. I did not specifically anticipate that He would answer it. It was more of a rhetorical question. A venting question.

And yet, today He answered me. Very clearly, He dropped the answer into my heart, saturated with His love and tenderness. It ministered to me deeply.

I have been asking Him more and more questions over the last few months. I ask Him about every wondering that comes into my mind or heart. I have been discovering that He loves this. It delights His heart when you and I engage with Him about what puzzles us. He treasures it when we involve Him in every big thing and every little thing that matters to us. He longs to be a part of our every moment, our every thought, and our every experience.

And He loves to answer us. This is why He says to us invitingly, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” When we reach out to Him, He reaches back to us in response. When we ask Him for His perspective, He eagerly shares it with us.

Sometimes, the “great and mighty things” that we need to see are simply glimpses of His majesty. So often, our circumstances seem to loom ominously over us like threats of inescapable hopelessness. When we call to Him, He will open our eyes to see things as they really are. Like Elisha’s servant, we will suddenly perceive all of Heaven’s immensity backing us up (2 Kings 6:17).

Today, He promises us, “Ask Me. Seek Me. Call to Me. As you do, I will open your eyes to My infinite superiority over any circumstances threatening you. Come close to Me. I will lavish on you the right perspective. Commune with Me. I will hold you close, and I will show you what I see.”

When you ask God questions, do you have an inner anticipation that He will answer?

    1. I am there with you, Bruce! It sure sometimes seems like it would be nice for Him to provide the answer sooner than He does, but I’m so grateful for the way He leads our heart deeper and deeper into trust and absolute dependence, where we don’t lean on our own understanding. Many, many blessings to you as well!

  1. I ask Him questions and He does answer, often in unexpected ways. I notice that I must be listening for the answer because if I’m not I might miss it. Sometimes it almost seems like God answers with a sense of humor. For example I recently asked Him a heartfelt question and within the next several days, multiple blogs that I follow, my Bible reading plans (all 3 of them!) and my own Pastor’s sermon that week all had very relevant answers to the specific question I had just asked. I hope He enjoyed my delight when I smiled broadly in prayer and said, “Okay, I get it now, thank You for answering my question in so many ways!”

    1. Aww!! I am smiling SO big reading about how that went for you, because I so get it! I have experienced that same kind of response from Him, that is exceedingly generous and over the top with confirmations. It is absolutely delightful! And you’re right, I know He just enjoys seeing us blessed by it so, so much. Thank you so much for sharing, you really blessed me!

  2. Jenn, when I bring my questions to the Lord, I have no doubt that He is listening and will respond. (I recently had a season of writing and preaching on this very topic!) Where the struggle continues is with both my patience in waiting for the response and with dealing with the answer He gives that was not what I had been looking for.
    Blessing,
    Chuck

  3. Yes it is that part of “He longs to be a part of our every moment” that always gets me. I can barely fathom that my own wife and daughters want to spend time with me let alone my Creator but yet therein lies the truth of the matter. This love still remains a mystery to me but yet I delight in Jesus more than I can say.

    1. I am smiling with deep fondness, reading your words, Homer. And I know He delights in your delight in Him, far more than you have yet conceived of! I am praying right now that He would take that revelation to a new level for you this week, in a way that would bring healing and refreshing to your heart. He just did that for me yesterday, and it healed something that was hurting. I sense He wants to do that for you too!

    1. It really is, isn’t it, Mike? My best friend was just surprised by her Bible study group with an item she’s been secretly wishing for, for many years. She had literally told no one about it, not even me. And our loving Father just answered in exactly that, a very unexpected way! I am feeling joyful about His care for us, sharing her joy 🙂 🙂

    1. Aw thank you too, Maxine! Amen and amen! I actually was just writing a new post this afternoon (possibly for tomorrow) that goes right along with what you’re saying. I am so grateful for the way He opens our eyes to who He is! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, my friend ❤

    1. That is so beautifully true, Brenda! I think about our precious brothers and sisters in China who have not had as easy access to His Word as we do, and the testimonies of them cherishing just one page from the Bible, and taking turns among themselves passing the one page around and trading back and forth. What riches are ours!

  5. Awesome post😊 Yes …God does answer. And Knowing&believing that He will answer, we never cease to ask Him and that’s beautiful. I choose to trust His plans and perfect timing when my prayers take too long to be answered. Blessing🙏

    1. Amen, thank you Saron for that reminder. Right now I am waiting on Him for a vitally needed answer, and I too am choosing to trust even though it’s not as fast as I would wish for. I really appreciate your words today ❤

  6. One of the most enlightening things I’ve heard recently was from a interview Dan Rather had with Mother Teresa.

DR: When you pray to God, what do you say?
    MT: I don’t say anything, I listen.
DR: Okay, when God speaks to you, what does he say?
MT: He doesn’t say anything. He listens.

As you say, sometimes we just need to see glimpses of his majesty, or just hear him in our spirit. It is easy to fill the space with our own thoughts and desires, but we don’t need to.

Thank you for sharing the wisdom of the holy spirit.
