Inner Rest: Today Is That Day

“So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today” (Heb. 4:7, NLT).

Transparency moment. During this lockdown, I have had moments of being overwhelmed to tears. For some people, quarantine has meant that everything slowed down. This has not been the case for me. On the contrary, my load has significantly increased. I already did almost all my work from home, so I don’t have less of the usual stuff to do. Now, on top of it, I am carrying the responsibility for overseeing my kids’ schoolwork at home.

Why do I mention this? Because Jesus is doing something beautiful with it, and I want to brag on Him! I also am pretty sure that there’s something for you in this; thus my sharing. Through this present season, ironically, He is training me to rest deeper. Yes, shaping our souls into restfulness: I believe that this is another vital aspect of what Holy Spirit has been doing recently all over the world.

I’ll go ahead and let you know up front, I’m with Paul on this. “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own” (Phil. 3:12, ESV). I am definitely still a work in progress here (thus the overwhelmed tears). I’m sharing this from the midst of my learning process. I am aware that this is the next level of a long training course Holy Spirit has had me in for years. It’s been taking me a while.

That said, here is the bottom line: I believe He’s currently teaching you and me to operate out of a posture of inner rest – even as we carry out the many responsibilities He has entrusted to us. “So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today” (Heb. 4:7, NLT). Yes, today is that day. It’s time to enter His rest.

I think the following fifteen-second video illustrates beautifully what He is continuing to show us. It’s a glimpse of a light-bulb moment I experienced some months before the quarantine started. At that time, I needed to get my kids’ Peruvian ID cards renewed. As He loves to do, Holy Spirit turned the outing into a teaching opportunity. Here, take a look, and you’ll see what I mean in a moment:

What you are viewing there is a government agent taking my son David’s fingerprints for the renewal process. Here’s what Holy Spirit whispered to me about it: this is a perfect picture of how we are to operate in God. Do you see? All we need to do is extend our hands to God and make them available. He takes our hands in His, and He does the work through them.

David did not even have to press down on the paper. The man did that for him, using David’s fingers. In fact, he asked David not to press; not to do anything but yield to his movements. This was not David’s job; it was his. And yet, what resulted was David’s fingerprints all over the resulting document produced.

How does this apply to life right now for you and me? If we will hold out our hands, Holy Spirit will take them. He will do all the heavy lifting… as we rest in Him, yielding to His working. He will move through us and accomplish extraordinary things through our lives. Then we will look and be amazed… as He has left our fingerprints all over His work!

“For I have worked harder than any… yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace” (1 Cor. 15:10, NLT).

  1. One of the more sensitive post I read among so many. Beautifully done Jennifer. Loved how you connected things together with the example. I’ve been thankful too to the Lord for so much of inspiration He has allowed during this time. Will try sharing more with you as we go along. I shall certainly look forward to more of your wisdom and pure writing.

  3. Jennifer, resting in the natural and spiritual has always been a challenge for me. I have allowed my natural mind to control my way of dealing with life. I have always felt neglectful and irresponsible if I was not about something “productive “. When in the Spirit, I detected the source of this anxiety and accusation, I did battle, but more in the flesh then the Spirit. Until I recognized and acknowledged that this attack must be surrendered to God alone, I encountered defeat again and again. Has this ceased ? Have I arrived ? NO ! I must keep laying down what the flesh and satan continues to place in front of me. In this time of much seclusion and less distraction, God has provided me with areas of rest I never considered. I rejoice and give thanks to all He is doing. Len W.

    1. You are welcome, my sis! I know I need to hear it again and again for sure! ❤ By the way, I need to apologize, because when you answere my question last time, I was in a bluster of activity and failed to make note of your answer properly. Would you mind sharing with me again what you prefer to go by? Is it Deb? Your whole name? I will make sure and make careful note this time.

  4. Again thank you sincerely for your sensitive post. All I can say here is that I agree with you absolutely. Surrendering your whole life no matter what your ‘shut-down’ circumstance and let Him take you Hand. The deep rest can indeed be profound!. We will all know sometime in the future just what the Lord has done in us during this unprecedented period of life ……lived
in a different way with HIM.
