Night Parables: Treasures of Darkness

“And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name” (Isa. 45:3, NLT).

Do you believe that God could speak to you through your dreams? Throughout both Old and New Testaments, there are examples of Him conveying His guidance to people in this way. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What’s more, He is a God who delights in communicating with us. I believe that the topic of dreams is one that has been underemphasized… and that Daddy God just might have some vitally important messages to give you as you sleep.

Let’s take a look at today’s verse. “And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—secret riches.” Today, as I was on my way home, Holy Spirit spoke to my heart about this Scripture. He pointed out that His communication to us through our dreams fits into this category: “treasures hidden in the darkness.” It’s dark while you’re asleep, right? We can conclude, then, that He deposits these treasures into your spirit, literally in the darkness.

However, there’s more here. “Darkness” is also symbolic; it speaks of mystery. When it’s dark, you have to peer closely to be able to see anything. You have to make an exerted effort with your eyes. This reminds me of what it’s like when I wake up in the morning, remembering a dream. I have to “peer” closely at my memory banks to capture the details of what I dreamed. Usually dreams have an ephemeral quality to them. The scenes that you “saw” as you slept often seem hazy in your perception. You have to make the extra effort to focus in on what they were. When you do so, the particulars start coming back to you.

The fleeting nature of dreams also means that if you don’t capture them, they soon tend to “evaporate.” For this reason, I pay close attention to my dreams, immediately. When, upon waking, I have a sense that my dream was from God, I lean into it. I avoid grabbing my phone and allowing the day’s busyness to rush over my senses. Instead, I keep my eyes closed and focus on remembering the dream sequence and details. I don’t move, until I have replayed in my mind everything that I am able to recall about them.

I have found that the more you practice this, the more you come to remember. I now remember much more of my dreams than I did when I started this practice. It’s like working out a muscle. Your power of dream recall will grow, as you exercise it.

Why do I do this? Because I understand that my God-given dreams are “secret riches.” Often, they are enigmatic and hard to understand at first. Daddy loves to speak to us through parables, and our dreams are no exception. They are frequently like puzzles, or riddles to solve. One of my daughters said to me recently, “I wish God would speak more directly.” I bet we all wish that sometimes! However, He takes great delight in our willingness to search out His mysteries. This demonstrates to the Lord that we are hungry for more of Him.

And I am hungry! So, after I finish intentionally remembering my dream, I either immediately make a voice recording of it, or write it in my dream journal. I have a journal dedicated exclusively to the dreams that God gives me. I used to add my dreams to my general journal. However, a couple years ago, Holy Spirit led me to start a separate journal for them. As soon as I did that, I started getting more dreams from Him. He rewards obedience, and He rewards hunger!

So if you haven’t already, why don’t you give it a try? Next time you have a dream that you suspect might be from Him, start with the basics. Take the time needed to focus in on remembering it, and then make a record of it. If you stick with it, I promise, you will not be sorry.

  1. Profoundly unique perspective!. I read that in gripping exaltation. Dreams are very interesting — when we are asleep we dream because our brains are still working, just like our lungs are still pumping, and blood is still flowing through our veins even though we don’t think twice about some of these aspects since they happen so naturally.

    This all reminds me so much of GOD in a way because even when we are not thinking about him, he’s still cares about us and his love never ever stops. Alot of the things that give us life and give us voice, precious dreams and things alike, are truly blessings, they are not just a product of evolution — they are origins of love.

    Dreams are like a self-examination without the physical repercussions, they are like a test — things that immerse you into ethereal experiences in a variety of different ways and outcomes, helping you to question your limits, pay attention to things alot deeper and even draw you closer to GOD. Jennifer, I am wholeheartedly in unison with your revelations!

That’s a beautiful observation, of how those parts of us function without us even thinking about them are such a picture of God unbreakable faithfulness even when we are not mindful of Him or His goodness. How unsearchable are His riches! ❤

      1. Wow you definitely hit it right were it counts Jennifer.

        God cares for us extremely deeply and in a way that we cannot even imagine — imagine if we were to have the knowledge or the zeal to actually care for, think of and treat people with that kind of nurture and that kind of consideration.

        That is certain a way of life i’ll be dreaming about for as long as I am an imperfect being 😄😄

  2. I dream a lot, but I have never considered writing them down. Often I wake in the night from disturbing dreams and rebuke them so I can go back to sleep. I suffer from insomnia, and after fighting it for years I finally agreed to take something to sleep. I have to admit I feel more rested, however, I also wonder if that influences my dreams because my dreams seem more active? Still, God can even speak through a pill! Interesting concept I will have to consider.

    1. He absolutely can! Also, I wonder if you are having more dreams because you are sleeping more deeply? Seems in my memory like REM sleep, when we dream, is part of the deeper part of sleep?

      Another thought is, although I write my dreams down more and more frequently because He seems to increase the volume the more I pay attention, at the same time, there are some here and there that I don’t write down, as I don’t get a specific leading to do so/they don’t specifically feel like a message from Him. I try to lean into Holy Spirit each time, to get a leading from Him on whether or not to do so with each individual case. I so appreciate you taking the time to share 🙂 Much love to you, my sister!

  3. Jennifer, does the enemy have access to our dreams ? I think so ! I believe he shoots fiery darts into our mind, awake or asleep. My present circumstances are often filled with pain and discomfort. With meds so necessary for Linda and I and medical care nearly every weeks, it has much impact on our thoughts and rest. This battle never ceases. Surrendering that which the enemy means for evil is often a moment by moment challenge. Yes, we can do all things through Christ Jesus. He alone is my rock while I remain in the valley and season I am in. Amen Len W

    1. Oh definitely, I have experienced plenty of spiritual attacks on my dreams too. A mentor I had at Harvest Rock Church twenty years ago before I moved to Peru explained to us that, the more of a gift we have in the area of dreaming, the more the enemy would try to attack there too. But I have also experienced increased victory in that area over the years, and I believe He calls us to grow “from victory to victory,” even in the area of nighttime sleep, all sheerly by His grace! This is such a relevant question, my brother, I thank you for bringing it up. I just may need to write a post about this one!

      1. Yes. I was on what I perceived to be a familiar college campus, desiring to move simply from one building to another. But the normal path would change before my eyes, re-forming and adding obstacles as I watched. The place I wanted to get to was still in sight, but the difficulty getting there had multiplied. In that I could still see the goal, I felt it to be a reminder of the importance of perseverance.

  5. Our God forever will be a revelatory God and speaks to us whenever and however He wishes. Through the ‘still small voice’ of His Spirit. Through His Word a sudden scripture revealed for us personally. Dreams remembered when written down often can reveal much about Who He really is.

  6. I forgot to mention how much I valued what you have shared and written here Jennifer. it is thought-provoking.
    Before 9/11 and the twin towers fell. I can never forget the Vision/dream shown to me by the Lord. It shocked me profoundly and now in 2020 I can look back and see the beginning of end times as written in the Book of Revelations first stages began on that fateful morning. Oh I passionately believe that medications distort His Voice but I do not believe that the enemy can access our minds during dreams. We are blood bought children and in Him we have sound and protected minds. Yet, in dreams He will speak and we will KNOW it is Him because of the unravelling (you described above). xx

  7. Great post. I never thought about journaling my God-given dreams. I have had a few, and they have been intense revelation about myself or the the spiritual side of an event in my life. I don’t read too many posts about dreams, that have a scripture base. I love that verse!
