Little by Little

Daddy 3

“Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land” (Ex. 23:30, NKJV).

When God told His people to move in and take possession of the inheritance He had for them, He did not promise to give it to them all at once. One the contrary, He promised that it was going to take a long time. He purposefully built an expectation into their hearts for a prolonged, drawn-out process.

Our spiritual lives work the same way today. There are many, many promises lying in front of us as we journey forward in God. However, He wants us to have a realistic expectation about moving into the fullness of what He has planned for us. It’s going to take a long, long while. The progress will be sure, steady, and guaranteed as we pursue Him with all of our hearts. Very specifically, the phrase He gives us here in His word is “little by little.”

Little by little, you will get to know His heart. Little by little, your intimacy with Him will increase. Little by little, He will build a mind-boggling friendship with you as you spend time with Him every day. Little by little, He will teach you to trust Him completely. Little by little, His beauty will conquer your heart. Little by little, His perfect love will cast out all of your fears.

Little by little, the revelation of His love for you will heal your heart. Little by little, He will find all the broken parts of your soul and restore them one by one. Little by little, He will break every chain of spiritual oppression that ever held you back. Little by little, He will show you who you are.

Little by little, you will see Him more clearly. Little by little, you will become like Him as you gaze on His glory. Little by little, He will pour so much of His love into your heart that it will overflow. Little by little, you’ll be loving others the way He loves you. Little by little, you will find yourself taking on more and more of His gentle, kind, gracious, forgiving attributes.

So don’t look at someone who has long walked closely with Him and despair of ever having that person’s amazing experience of God. Whoever that someone is, he or she got there little by little too. And no matter how much they may have advanced, they still have incalculable miles to yet travel forward in God, little by little. Rather than worrying about what you haven’t yet attained in Him, relax and determine to enjoy the road.

The scenery is breathtaking as we walk onwards with Jesus, hand in hand, little by little!

Have you given yourself permission to be “in process,” maturing little by little in Him?

  1. “Little by little” allows us time to develop faith in Him and realize that His is the one true right road. If we were given the whole package all at once, I believe we would be less likely to understand and appreciate what God had done.
And yes, it is a great hope that He’s not done with me, or any of us!

  2. This encouraged me so much this morning as I sat and tried to pick up so many broken pieces from my heart. “Little by little, He will find all the broken parts of your soul and restore them one by one.” He has been restoring broken pieces one by one, but at times it feels there are so many remaining. Thanks for this post.

  3. One day in His courts is like a thousand years ! As I look at my “years-70” and times gone by, two thoughts come to mind. The Father is not DONE with me yet, for I am here to please Him in this day. Then I ponder the times gone by and reflect on His faithfulness in my life. In moments of weariness, I am hard pressed to be delighted in some of the circumstances in my life. But then, the Spirit lifts me up and assures me God does not view where I have been but focuses on where I am and what He has planned… step by step…little by little. Let not age be a barrier nor conditions we set on ourselves, for God is a God of the impossible and the eternal. Amen Len Wisniewski

  4. I think I’m in aa season of “little by little” right now. I feel like I’m not sure what I should be doing, or writing, right now. It’s so frustrating.

    1. I’m really sorry to hear about that, my sister. I’m lifting you up in prayer right now, that Holy Spirit would speak to your heart in His still, small voice of encouragement and strengthen your heart as you wait on Him. He cherishes you so very much!
