Utterly Helpless Without Him

Reaching for the moon

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8, ESV).

Just accept it. You will never be able to do well enough on your own. You will always need His help. You will always need a Savior. Your own inner resources will ever fall utterly short of being enough. You will always need His sufficiency, His sustaining, and His strength. Every day for the rest of your life, you will be entirely dependent on His grace.

How freeing it is to acknowledge this with all of your heart! The first day I surrendered to Jesus, and every day since then, I have been, and still am, completely helpless on my own. Faith, in the present moment – just like when I got saved – is accepting that I cannot do anything for myself. It’s abandoning myself to His mercy and power. “For who has ever given to God?” (Rom. 11:35a, NIV). With nothing to offer Him, I dive headfirst into His ocean of grace. Come, dive in with me!

Your inner legalist may object, “Hey now, I have done a lot for God!” If so, you’re in good company. The disciples felt that way too. They protested to Jesus, “We have left everything to follow You!”

Come into the light, precious one. The light will reveal who really did the work. “But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God” (John 3:21, NIV). Anything truly beautiful that has been done through your life, He did it. He did it by His grace. The more you come into His revelation light, the more you see that it’s all been Him.

Lean into that, child. Lean into Him. Forget about yourself, your strengths, your weaknesses, how well you are doing or not doing for Him, what a good Christian you are being or not being. Forget all of that. Look into His eyes. Get lost in His beauty, His sufficiency, His strength, His limitless ability! Let who He is fill up all your inner space.

Make a lifestyle out of this. The more you forget yourself and get lost in His gaze, the more His power can surge through your everyday living!

  1. As I walk in the Spirit each day, He opens the eyes of my soul to catch glimpses of the Father’s faithfulness and goodness. Things that may have no meaning or purpose to those in the world become delightful and sometimes profound in my spirit. This makes me leap in Joy, knowing the Father’s good favor towards me. I will delight in this day that You have given me Lord and Praise Your Holy Name. Len W.

  2. I’m learning more about SURRENDER. I’m letting God the Holy Spirit give me His Wisdom through the Word. He is teaching more about what the sacrifice at the Cross truly means for this broken world. Thank you for your blog. In His Strength alone Mike, It is FINISHED Christ cried from the cross…..the battle is over. SURRENDER TO the Risen Saviour and let His Spirit work, lead, guide and strengthen you. Peace and Blessings.
