“I’m being pursued only by your goodness and unfailing love” (Ps. 23:6a, TPT).
“And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you” (Deut. 28:2a, NKJV).
Pursued by goodness and love. Overtaken by His blessings. Sounds like a pretty amazing arrangement, right?
What Daddy God is wanting to communicate to us through these Scriptures is that He is the Initiator. In our relationship with Him, He is the Pursuer. He is the Author of our faith, the One writing the story. We are the wooed, we are the betrothed. We are the ones living out the dreams of His heart.
You are His dream. Long before He gave birth to creation, He was dreaming of you. “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us… This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure” (Eph. 1:4a, 5b, NLT)
He has longed for you for endless ages. When the moment was exactly right, He brought you forth. And now He is pursuing you.
We can’t draw near to Him unless He takes the initiative and exerts a pull on our spirits. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” (John 6:44a, NIV). He knows this, and so He longingly draws us to Himself. He entices us with His beauty. He magnetizes us with His magnificence. He conquers our hearts with the tenderness of His love.
We can’t come to know Him intimately unless He takes the initiative and pours revelation into the depths of us. “No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” (Matt. 11:27b, ESV). He understands this, and so He reaches out and touches the eyes of our hearts, healing our blindness. We look up in wonder and finally see Him for who He is. He smiles into our eyes and floods our inner being with the light of His countenance.
If He is the Initiator, what, then, is our part? To listen. To yield. To surrender. When He calls, to put all else aside, and to come away with Him. To minister to the depths of His heart by giving Him our yes.
Today, He is pursuing you. He yearns to manifest Himself to you, to overtake you with His love. He is drawing you. Do you feel that nudge to come away and be with Him?
How will you respond?
“Take me away with you — let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers” (Song 1:4, NIV).

Oh, mercy, yes. I encourage people to use common sense here: He’s chasing you, you can’t outrun Him or hide from Him, so you might as well give in, stop running, and see what God has in mind! With your post, I thought of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ “The Hound of Heaven” immediately; it’s worth a look! — Mike

I have heard that phrase used here and there over the years but never knew where it came from — is it a book? And that is very wise advice you are giving people on the subject! 😉

It’s a poem, on the futility of trying to run from God, and His tenacity in chasing us down. Good stuff.

For years, Jennifer, I knew our Father was seeking me and I elected to look else where for love and truth and comfort. In most recent times, through His faithfulness, He was allowed me to be exhaused and empty of self and life as I knew it. I now am where He desires. Abandon to His calling and taking His lead in my days ahead. Praise be to You Father for ever more. Amen Len Wisniewki
