“He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope” (Isa. 42:4, NIV).
This verse is part of one of Isaiah’s messianic prophecies, foretelling Jesus’ ministry. I love the insight it gives us into our Lord’s emotions. Specifically, into the steadfast stability and stalwart strength of His emotional experience as He governs the universe.
“He will not falter or be discouraged.” Clearly, we are far from the place where He will have fully established justice on the earth. Flagrant, heartbreaking, deeply disturbing injustices roll daily before our eyes through every news outlet. And yet, there He is, on the throne, completely unperturbed. Not faltering. Not discouraged. At all. In fact, His response to all the enemy’s plotting and raging is to laugh! (Ps. 2:1-4). Fully aware of every last movement of even the smallest demons, He is nonetheless unceasingly enveloped in glorious, invincible, unwavering peace.
Are you faltering today? Is discouragement trying to smother your joy? If so, look to Him. Look to the Author and Finisher of your faith. When you catch a glimpse of the victory sparkling in His eyes, your perspective will shift. He knows something that He will impart to you, if you will linger in His presence. You may already know it in your head, but He will deepen that knowledge, causing it to saturate the core of you.
He will say to you, “In Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NKJV). “Yes, child, the devil is prowling like a roaring lion. Yes, he is daily causing grief around you. Yes, he is trying to destroy so many lives. But look into My eyes. Do you see My unfaltering, powerful, prevailing peace? I make it Yours now. I have already won. Be of good cheer, precious one. Live your life today from the place of My victory. I have overcome the world.”
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable…” (1 Cor. 15:58a, ESV).

Why do you think God laughs at the devil?
Hi Jennifer
Deceit is always shifting, altering the lie at every revelation of the lie. The Truth remains constant unwavering and can be relied upon consistently. God observes evil’s constant attempts to lure His children with the same old lies. Fear, loneliness, and pride. He laughs as His children rest in His constancy and Love with their swords and shields.

He’s laughing at what is proven to be the futility of the devil’s efforts. But beyond that, I see God with quite a serious expression, wishing that things might have been different, but looking at Satan and saying, “You made your choice. Begone, and live with the consequences.” Let us all continue our efforts so that no one will have to hear those terrible words. If there is one person out there who doesn’t know Jesus, the church’s work is not done. — Mike

Yes, I agree. And it’s amazing to me how God can simultaneously express so many different emotions and thoughts at the same time. Laughter and seriousness, victory and gravity, all at once in His infinite capacity. Amen and AMEN to our job not being done yet!!

Jennifer, did Jesus ever laugh, I think so?! When He was in the company of children I believe He smiled and laughed [the element of joy is brought forth]. When God sees the victory in His “children” He must smile and laugh. Len
