Got Wisdom?

“If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5, AMPC).

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17, ESV)

Is there some area of your life today in which you are desperately needing God’s wisdom? Read on, then, for some wonderful news!

Scripture tells us that Christ Himself has become for us wisdom from God (1 Cor. 1:30). He actually is wisdom; wisdom is a living Person. The more you walk with this Person, the wiser you will become. In the verses above, James provides us with two beautiful glimpses into the heart of Jesus, the embodiment of our wisdom.

The first thing we learn about our Wisdom is that His nature is giving. There is no reluctance or reticence in His demeanor, whatsoever. His disposition is generous to the point of lavishness. We don’t need to beg, plead, jump through hoops, or try to talk Him into answering. When it comes to responding to our requests for His guidance, He is big-hearted and open-handed. He gives His answers liberally and ungrudgingly; His soul overflows with unrestrained extravagance in response to us. He relishes it when we ask, and He delights in answering!

Here’s what will happen when you seek Him for wisdom: “How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you… Your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isa. 30:19-22, NIV).

As soon as you cry out, He is responding to you. He does not hide Himself from His children. Remember the hide-and-seek example? Our Daddy God makes Himself so easy to find, if we will set our hearts to seek Him!

The next glimpse James gives us into the nature of Jesus our Wisdom has to do with the sound of His voice. Jesus is our Wisdom from heaven, so the list of characteristics in the second verse above is a description of how He speaks. Once you have inquired of Him, this is what to listen for: His tone will be first of all “pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

As He responds to you and begins to communicate His direction to your spirit, His expression will carry purity, peace, and gentleness. He will show you that He is open to your feelings and perspective, desirous of listening to you too. He will reveal to you that His heart towards you is full of mercy, overflowing with all the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness – those are His fruits!).

So take a deep breath and sink down into His faithfulness. His covenant commitment to instruct you in the way you should go is unwavering, impartial and sincere!

  2. Yes I have. But it took a long time to fish it from the sea. I was listening to Relevant Radio yesterday and there was a segment on vocation and how God calls upon us to work through that vocation. When I heard that, the message just seemed to make sense. Thank you for reinforcing this lesson just one day later.

I think part of a person’s growth process involves taking varied ideas and facts which we consider true, and figuring out how to incorporate those nuggets into the whole of the person we wish to become, with God’s help. Said easier, turning knowledge into wisdom. God helps us with that work, and it is part, I feel, of becoming a more mature believer. Though a work in progress, it has been so with me. — Mike

    1. Very well explained, Mike. And He is such a faithful Helper as He teaches us to apply these truths and grow! And isn’t it wonderful to experience the increased freedom that comes with cooperating with His maturation process? It just makes me want to keep growing! 😀

  4. I enjoy your site and articles. Their is a distinct vibe that the site emanates. A magnetic pull inward while emanating goodness outwardly.

    I like how you incorporate different Bible versions.

    Wisdom VS (Intelligence, Wit, Cleverness)

    They are distinctly different. But to the inexperienced unscrupulous eye, they appear quite the same.

    Cleverness, wit, and intelligence are cheap Chinese knock offs of the real thing-

    Gods Wisdom- which is the source of all things, in essence, is PURE TRUTH.

    At times I would be impressed and astonished at the words spoken by others. I would say, wow, they are smart. This person does know a few things. But things are not always as they appear. Its not until we begin to learn and understand God’s Wisdom, that we can clearly distinguish between the two.

    Cleverness, Wit, and Intelligence take shorcuts, detours, they circumvent, cheat, manipulate, and undermine the simplicity and integrity of Truth.

    Once we align ourselves with God and His Spirit, as you mentioned who is WISDOM itself, then by that very spirit being imparted into us, it then illuminates all circumstances and scenarios, words spoken, theories, conjectures, doctrines, lines of reasoning, by contrasting them against all that is TRUE. Allowing us to then to perceive with clarity the futility of seeking our own ways. It aids us by revealing the people around us who masquerade around life seeking to impress and receive recognition for their talent and wit. The ones who stand so proudly on being clever, clever themselves into believing they can work themselves out of any situation, only then to discover who God is.

You are so right that there is an appearance of wisdom out there, that is not wisdom at all. Reminds me of the verse that says God has made foolish the wisdom of the “wise.” The richest of blessings to you!

        I AM WISDOM. ” perfect response to any moment a man or woman feels they are absolutely positive about a thing.

  5. Amazing, yesterday I read the same scripture Isaiah 30:19-22. Also the Ephod (Urim and Thummim) Numbers 27:21 and Exodus 28:15-30. Thank you for the blogs you post!

  6. One other thing came to mind:

    A clever person doesn’t care how they arrive, what matters is that they arrive.

    A wise person understands that the only way to arrive is through TRUTH.

    The clever person jumps up and down and is able to rejoice after winning first place in the race while knowing they used a bike for a 1/4 mile in a running marathon. All they care about is winning.

    The wise person would rather face defeat and humiliation than cheat his way to #1, he stands on merit and trueness.

      1. I speak from experience. I like being real and transparent. How many times did I try to clever my way somewhere. Get over on someone and think its cute. Only caring about myself and my feelings. And to this very day, many things remain hidden from my awareness. I must pray daily for Gods light to reveal the things within me that hide.

      2. Yes, I join you in that prayer! Along with the Psalmist in Psalm 19, “Forgive my hidden faults!” And “examine me, search my heart, and lead me in the way everlasting!” Being transparent is so good, so freeing, and so helpful for others too. That’s wonderful 🙂

  8. Back in 1986, my teaching position was cut so I had to look for a new position. God had a plan, and He led me to a wonderful community where I taught for 22 years. My three daughters had a great place to grow up.

  9. GOD’S WISDOM is needed by all believers in this 2019 world. Anything less than Divine is imperfect and often leads to deception but God has planned for this. His Holy Spirit came because of the sacrifice at Calvary NOW…….Praise God!
    1 Cor. 2:16 ……..For who has known the wisdom of God to instruct him?
    but, we, we have the MIND OF CHRIST. This is a God Gift not all the time or we’d BLOW UP but…….with surrender, and love for the Lord seeking, like a child with humility…… His Presence within enables us to appropriate HIS MIND and His Wisdom. (How I wish I been aware of this years ago. Perhaps then I would not have made so many wrong life choices). Blessings and thanks for the blog.

  10. This is so encouraging and such a confirmation for me to keep moving forward knowing that God hears me and if he hears me He will grant me my petition. I have gone though so much pain and joy in the last 5 years and I continue to hold on to His wisdom because He has proven faithful!
