More of God than Moses Had

Praying at sunset

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (2 Cor. 3:18, ESV).

Yesterday we talked about how Moses was not satisfied with his frequent, face to face conversations with God. He wanted more. Having tasted of the Lord’s goodness, his appetite only increased. My father-in-law likes to say, in reference to prayer, “Once you’ve tasted the honey, you can never leave it alone again.” This is an idiomatic phrase in Spanish, artfully expressing a powerful truth. If you get even a glimpse of how lovely Jesus really is, His overwhelming beauty ever after compels your heart in unending pursuit of Him.

Moses yearned to see more of God’s glory, and obtained what He cried out for. Yet, 2 Corinthians 3:7-11 insists that what Jesus has brought us into now is even more glorious than what Moses was able to receive. It’s in the context of this insistence that we find our well-known, well-loved, often quoted verse about being transformed from glory to glory. As Moses knew in his spirit, there are varying degrees of glory. He was going after the greater degree. This life-giving Scripture assures us that God is moving us, too, “from one degree of glory to another.”

As I was praying this morning, Holy Spirit pointed out to me a dissimilarity between the glory Moses encountered, and the glory available to you and me. That which he experienced was diminishing: “…The Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was…” (2 Cor. 3:7, NIV, bold emphasis mine). As amazing as it was, the glory Moses drank in gradually faded with the passing of time. In contrast, Holy Spirit describes that which He has made ours as “ever-increasing glory” (v. 18, NIV, bold emphasis mine again).

Ever-increasing glory. Do you hear that? Rather than diminishing, this glory is constantly growing! Daddy is shifting us from one degree of this glory to another, unceasingly. This is glory that never, ever fades. Glory that gets brighter and brighter, richer and richer, deeper and deeper, more and more intimate, more and more free! Now, that’s astounding. This glory is so glorious, it makes Moses’ experience look not even glorious. “For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory” (v. 10, NIV). What we have been handed, what Jesus bought for us with His blood, is the surpassing glory! It surpasses all other glory that has ever been known!

Drink this in, dear one. If He eagerly welcomed Moses’ plea to gaze on greater degrees of His glory, how much more welcome is your blood-bought cry! How much more will He honor your blood-purchased seeking! Child of the Most High God, the surpassing glory is yours!

“Daddy God! Please show me Your glory!!!”
